In this monologue, the speaker highlights a striking statistic that 72% of founders experience mental‑health impacts while only about 20% seek help, underscoring a widespread burnout crisis among entrepreneurs. He argues that founders cannot simply quit, because their performance directly determines the health of their companies. To break the burnout cycle, he shares two concrete practices he uses whenever he feels burned out: (1) taking a vacation, which forces the business to operate without the founder, empowers the team to step up, and gives the founder mental distance to generate fresh ideas; and (2) redefining and rewriting the founder’s job description, explicitly stating both what they will do and, crucially, what they will not do, thereby reshaping the work environment around the founder instead of the founder bending to it. The speaker frames rest as productive work and emphasizes that fixing the founder’s role will align the leader’s health with the company’s success.

So I just saw the stat that 72% of founders report mental health impacts, but only 20-something percent actually seek help for it. I completely believe that every single business owner that I know, they're struggling. And we struggle with burnout, we struggle with overwhelm, we struggle with the stress and the pressure of it all. So if you're there and if you're struggling with it too, my guess is that you're right there there with us in incredibly good company. Here's what I wanna tell you though. You don't just get to quit. Good news, bad news, you don't just get to quit. When it's your business, you don't get to quit. At least you don't get to quit on a bad day. But if you're struggling and if you're not performing at 100%, that's a problem because you are your business's most valuable asset. Companies stall out when founders burn out. So two things that I do anytime I'm in burnout phase. Number one, I take a vacation. And you probably need a vacation Now if you're worried, I can't possibly take a vacation right now, what's gonna happen to the business? Look, right now you're ready to burn the whole thing down anyway, so what do you care? But the reality is what's gonna happen to the business is it's gonna get stronger because while you're away, your people are gonna step up. They actually will. You're gonna give them room to do that. You're also gonna give yourself room to think up new and fresh ideas. We gotta get that distance, that margin from the problem so that we can come up with new ideas. For us, for entrepreneurs, rest equals work. Very often when we're resting, it's when we're doing our best thinking and it's when we're doing our best work. The second thing you need to do, you gotta redefine your job description. Rewrite it, make sure that you're clear on the work that you do and importantly, the work that you do not do. It's almost more important to describe the latter. We need to build and structure our environment around us instead of continuing to bend and mold ourselves around our environment. It's not gonna work, that's what's gonna create burnout. So let's get you right, and when we get you right as a leader of the company, that's when your business is going to get right too.
