EP019: Latest Tony Robbins Conference by Sachin Patel
Sachin Patel summarizes his key takeaways from Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within (Chicago) for functional medicine practitioners. He focuses on environment and state (physiology, focus, meaning), breaking patterns/habits, the six human needs, business advice (preeminence, storytelling, follow-up), and a three-step path to mastery (model, immerse, spaced repetition).

Hello, hello and welcome to another episode of Perfect Practice. Today I'm coming to you live from one of my favorite spots to meditate. I'm here at Riverwood Conservancy, which is part of my new home actually. We bought a house that backs onto this beautiful crown land. And so I'm here, I'm meditating, and I'm reviewing my notes with Tony Robbins. I just came back from Unleash youh Power Within Life changing, really transformative for me. If you've ever been, I'd love to hear what your thoughts are. If you've never been, I highly encourage you go in and go there with an open mind and just be receptive to the transformation that lays ahead for you. So I thought what would be really great today is for me to review with you my biggest takeaways and from this conference and sharing with you what I thought was valuable to you as a functional medicine practitioner. So first things first. You know, this was in Chicago and you know, beautiful city, beautiful weather. I went there with my brother, my wife and my brother's business associate. And so we had a group of four of us. So I encourage you to go with your significant other and probably somebody else who's important in your life who can hold you accountable and you guys can help each other up, level your games. A lot of ideas came out of this event, so there's a lot of inspiration. You're in this peak state the whole time, which is pretty cool. There's no clocks, like you have no idea what time it is. And there's like, you know, There was about 8 to 10,000 people there and it was just amazing as an environment. So it's like this all day party. So 50 hours of learning, partying, being in this pumped up state. Everyone's there to grow. So getting yourself in a group of that type of people created creates an immense amount of energy and it's palpable. You can feel it and you Energize each other. And it's just pretty, pretty awesome. So environment is huge. And that's why it's not just about going into this environment for a few days out of your life and then coming back to a not so good environment. It's important that you create your environment so that you can be the best version of yourself. And your environment, believe it or not, is probably one of the easiest things for you to change. You can't change other people, and sometimes you can change circumstances depending on what you believe. I believe you can. But you certainly can influence your environment and the people you hang out with. You know, the five people you spend the most time with are gonna be a determination of who you are and who you become, okay? And remember, those people are the average of the five people they hang out with. So keep who they hang out with in mind as well. These are all things for you to take into consideration. Tony says that you should see things as they are, not worse. We have a tendency to see things and be marketed to as if things are worse than they actually are. You know, everything is neutral until we add meaning to it. Every situation is neutral until we add meaning to it. So very important for us to recognize that people want to change how they feel, okay? And in order for them to do that, they have to change their behaviors. This is important for our patients. If you want to change your health, you have to change the patterns. You are not the problem. The patterns are the problem. This is what we can communicate to our patients. Because if they view themselves as a problem, their genetics, or who they are as a soul, then they're gonna see themselves. They're gonna have a negative dialogue with themselves. But if they view their patterns as a problem, they can actually be willing to change them because they're just patterns. Success without happiness is the ultimate failure. So make sure happiness is your primary objective. I have a saying that the intake form of the future will one question on it, and that is, are you happy? Because if you're not happy, then that's where we need to start. That's what we need to reverse engineer in order for us to get the best health, in order for you to live the best life possible. Repetition is the mother of skill. So whatever you're repeating on a daily basis, you're just getting better at it. You get better at everything you do consistently. So if you're consistently making excuses, you're going to get better at making excuses. If you're consistent at pushing yourself, you're going to get better. And Grow and. And so on and so forth. You know, you also want to have anchors that help you learn. So it could be specific music or it could be specific scents. Your limbic system takes in information and imprints information based on the sights and smells and sounds of your environment. So when you get into a peak state, or if you want to get into a specific state, you can anchor that space with unique scents or sounds or, you know, a unique view. For example, the hardest person to be honest with really, is yourself. That was another big takeaway for me. And, you know, he also talked about your best life. So your best life is treading between desire and fear. You know, on the other side of fear is really bliss. And fear is what robs people of their best life. And the two biggest fears people have is the fear of failure and not being enough and the fear of not being loved. Those are two most important emotions that we have. And fear is based on those two things. Am I enough? And will I still be loved? So your best life is going to be somewhere on the other side of that fear. People who live their best life are resourceful, okay? And they also tend to find answers very, very, you know, resourcefully is the best way to put it. So be resourceful instead of asking people for help all the time. And sometimes that's okay, but show signs of resourcefulness. And when you get to a dead end, then you can ask somebody a question. And if you do that, then guess what, your staff will start doing that. Because if you're resourceful, then other people around you will be resourceful as well. Another thing Tony says is that belief is a poor excuse for an experience, okay? And that's true, right? So what somebody believes and their experience could be radically different, okay? Very important to understand as well. Tony's big on state, so he talks a lot about getting up, moving around, jumping around, if that needs to be the case. And there's three things that really impact your state. And the goal is to get yourself into a beautiful state where you're excited, where you have the physiology of excitement in your body of possibility, instead of the physiology of fear and stress and anxiety. So big thing about state with Tony is you want to be in the optimum state. And he can do that on command by jumping up and down, by dancing, by visualization. So a combination of these things can get you into this peak state. And when you're in this beautiful peak state, you operate at such a high level, so physiology is very important. So he talks about health and taking care of yourself. And he had Mark Hyman speaking there. So, you know, fundamental functional medicine principles about avoiding grains and eating healthy fats and you know, the microbiome, like very fundamental stuff that was covered by Mark Hyman, but a great introduction for these individuals. So physiology is a huge part. The next one is our focus. What are we focusing on? What are we focusing our attention and energy on? And if we're focusing our energy and attention on the right things, then we're going to have a certain state of function. If we focus on something that we have a negative emotion and attachment to, then it's going to create a negative state of physiology. So there's the focus that we have and then in addition to the focus, there's the meaning and language that we attach to what we're focusing on. So our state of physiology, which is health and vitality and excitement and possibility, combined with our focus focusing on our outcomes, focusing on our goals, focusing on what we're grateful for, focusing on the outcome we're trying to achieve. And then the third thing is the meaning that we attach to the outcome. What does it mean if I resolve this issue, if I solve this problem, if I acquire this client, what does it mean to me, to my business? And it's important to anchor that very deeply. And that's where visualization and guided meditation and things like that can come in. One thing he also says is that if you make life about yourself, you will always be in pain. If you make life about others, then that's where your pain free life lives. Because a life of contribution is, in my opinion at least the highest form of living is paying it forward, giving other people an opportunity. I don't like the word giving back. I like to use the phraseology paying it forward. So, you know, being able to contribute is where your best life lives and that's where your pain will be released as well. Okay, so another powerful, powerful concept and idea there for us as functional medicine practitioners, but also for our patients. Okay. And you know, he also talks about, you know, Robin Williams and how Robin Williams was, you know, on the outside, appeared to make everyone so happy. People loved him. But he had a really, really hard time keeping himself happy. And unfortunately he committed suicide. So, you know, he had success, but he had failure because of his values and beliefs had led to him not being as happy as he could be. Okay, so it's important that we live in this peak state, we focus on the right things, we attach the right meaning, and we have fulfillment in our own lives as practitioners and that we help Our patients accomplish this as well. Another thing for those of your patients that might have addictions, or even some of us that might have addictions, is you don't get rid of an addiction, you replace it with something else. Okay? So if you're trying to get a patient to quit smoking or to quit drinking, you know, find a replacement for them that provides them with a very similar feel, if you will, for a sensory perception, not a psychological perception, but a sensory perception of doing the same thing. So replace one food with another, or, you know, replace one drink with a better drink with a healthier alternative. So you replace the addiction with something else and something positive, which is very important. Tony says there's two skills to master in life. One is a science of achievement. There's certain formulas for that. And the art of fulfillment. So achievement and fulfillment are where your best life lives. Okay? He has three forces of creation as well. He lists out. One is our focus. It's what we focus on. You know, everything has to be created twice. So everything you see before you was created twice. Once in somebody else's mind and second when they manufactured it. So everything is created twice, and it's created by what people focus on. It's also then comes into fruition through massive action, okay? Effective execution. And effective execution often includes modeling. So finding mentors and other people who've done what you're trying to accomplish, because that's the fastest way for you to have success. And the last one is grace. And some people call it God, some people call it luck, some people call it the universe, some people call it serendipity, some people call it coincidence. But grace is very important. And that's where, you know, gratitude comes in and appreciation comes in. The greatest gift that each of you could give other people around you is your joy. Okay? So the best gift that you can give other people is your happiness. And these are great things to tell your patients because it's true, you know, the happiest version of themselves is the best version of themselves that they can give to other people. And so, you know, we want to use aspirational education based marketing and storytelling to get our patients to take action, because we know that what we can do for them is amazing and life changing. So I hope you're gathering from here certain tidbits and conversation pieces and strategies that you can use with your patients to get them to take meaningful action with you. Okay? Now, another thing he said that I thought was powerful is to stop judging people on what fulfills them and focus and figure out what fulfills you? So sometimes we might, you know, look at what somebody else is doing, where they're spending their money, where they're spending their time and energy, and we might judge them for that, but that might be the most fulfilling life for them. Okay? You got to focus on what fulfills you, and that has to be your primary focus, not focusing on what fulfills other people. Now, of course, as a healthcare practitioner, we have to be mindful of that comment as well, because we are trying to make some, you know, changes and, you know, slight curves, not complete, 180s right away. But we're trying to make people to make corrections in their daily strategy. So we can't judge them. We need to support them and educate them. So don't judge them, but educate them. And that's going to go a lot further in terms of your energy and their receptiveness to your strategy as well. One part of fulfillment is that you must continue to grow because any goal you set, you're going to hit. Any goal you set and focus on and spend energy on and pay attention to constantly, you're going to accomplish that. So that's not in question here. You have to figure out where you're going to grow from there and live in a constant state of growing, because that's very important. We also discussed the law of familiarity, which is when we get familiar with something, we stop being grateful for it. So think about a car. You buy it, and a week later you're not maybe not so grateful for it. Or think about how many of us take our spouses or children for granted or, you know, parents or grandparents for granted. You know, that's something that we need to take into consideration as well. Is, is that the case? Because we do become not necessarily ungrateful, but we forget to be grateful for the things we're familiar with. So think about that for a moment. That could be very helpful for you if you just have a moment of gratitude. Even now, pausing this and listening to it, think about, you know, a few things that you're grateful for. And I think that's going to be a big takeaway for you. One of the things Tony also said is the end of suffering is appreciation and the start of suffering. What creates suffering for a lot of us is expectation. So we expect things to work out a certain way. We expect people to be a certain way, and that might not be fair to them, or certainly it's not fair to you. Another thing he says is that your brain is not designed for happiness. It's designed for survival. Okay? So that's why people live in this kind of survivalistic mentality and state. And you've got to work kind of with your physiology and instigate your physiology in order to create the physiology of happiness. You know, when you think life is not. You know, when you think life is not fair, you will continue to suffer. Okay? And people have different flavors of suffering. They choose to suffer in many different ways. Now, any problem in your life is only as big as the amount of time and energy in your life that it occupies. So how much you think about something and how much attention you pay to it determines the size of how big that actual problem is. Okay, so they're going to start mowing the lawn here. So I've got to take off, but I'm just going to move to a different part of the park. So just give me one second. Walk with me. Okay. All right. Well, that's the awesome thing about doing these on site. You never know what you're going to get. So I'm going to move to a quieter part. We're going to be in the sun now, and we'll keep going. So, you know, as I'm going through this, I'm looking through my notebook. I'm giving you some of the major takeaways that I had. And certainly, you know, these are the things that I probably needed to learn because there was thousands of things that were said, as you can probably imagine. So our reticular, activating system is going to pick up on the things that we feel is relevant to us. And so some of these takeaways, I hope, resonate with you, and some you're going to have to have on your own when you go on this journey, whenever it's time or whenever the moment occurs for you. And it doesn't have to be Tony Robbins. It could be somebody else that you enjoy. But I definitely think that this personal development is a huge part of practice success because it is so deterministic in how well the quality of your life is going to turn out. So I would definitely encourage you to find your favorite personal speaker, somebody that inspires you. And Tony Robbins is certainly someone that comes to mind for a lot of people. So find that person for you. Or even just tune into YouTube. There's lots of great stuff, content on YouTube. You're not in the environment, so you're not necessarily in that peak state like you be when everyone's there. But certainly it's better than nothing, and it's a great place to start. Another thing that Tony talked about, which I think is relevant for us as healthcare providers, is energy. So the basis of all life is energy. So if your energy is a 10, then it leaves an opportunity for other things in your life to be a 10. But if your energy and health and function and vitality is a 6, well, nothing in your life can be a 7. Nothing in your life can even be a 6.01, because energy and your state of health is the base and the foundation of everything. Now, if we don't have that, then we don't have anything else. And this is where we need to really focus on our patients. Are we allowing them to have maximum vitality? And how can we help them achieve a peak state of health so that every other area of their life improves? So he's got this great pyramid that he shares with the seven bases of the best life. And I think it's a great graphic, and I'll see if I can share it when we upload it to the website. So here's something else that is really important and I think very relevant to you as a functional medicine practitioner. One thing that Tony talks about is the six human needs. The six human needs are critical. The first four are the things that we'll typically strive for, and the last two are the things that are for spiritual growth. Okay, so the first one is certainty. A lot of us want certainty in our outcomes, and that prevents us many times in taking action, because if we can't have absolute certainty, then we don't take massive action. And it's okay if that's your need. You just have to identify it and work around it and work through it so that it's not holding you back from living your best life. Next one is uncertainty. And with certainty comes predictability. And if your life is the same every single day because you live in such a certain state, then you're not going to have fun. It's going to get boring after a while. So uncertainty is variety. So we have all of these needs. We have a need for certainty and a need for uncertainty. The next one is significance. Significance is a feeling of importance, and this is attached to how other people feel about you. And then number four is love and connection. Loving ourselves, loving others, loving our family members, and having connected and meaningful relationships. The next one is number five, which is growth, and number six is contribution. So these growth and contribution are the ones that we should be focusing on. Those are our spiritual growth needs. And so most people don't focus on growth and they don't focus on contribution. Now that might be different for this particular audience because I'm sure many of you if the fact that you're listening this podcast puts you in a whole different percentage of the population. So I'm certain some of you have these elements as part of your daily strategy, growth and contribution, but most people don't. Now when he asked people and surveyed the room, the majority of people wanted certainty and significance. And he says that that's going to be the most common all across the entire planet. But it's a problem when significance comes first. So what he says is that if you put significance above everything else, which is ego, then you're going to be in a bad spot. So the key here is having all six of these needs met, getting them in the right order, trying to get growth and contribution at the top. And if you focus on growth and contribution, everything else takes care of itself. Everything else self regulates at that point. But if you focus on significance, then that's not going to be. You're going to be ego driven and that's not always the best way to run your business or even to live your best life. Okay? And so significance and, you know, certainty, those two combined leads to basically chronic misery. Okay? Chronic misery. Because the need to feel important is attached to somebody else and certainty is a need for perfection, and we know that that's not possible. Growth and contribution is what's going to lead to the ultimate level of happiness and living the most fulfilled life. Okay? Joseph McClendon spoke on day two and he said that without writing, there's no flighting. So there is no flight unless you write. Okay? So writing things down is very important. So when you go to conferences, when you go to seminars, when you're talking to your patients, like it's way better to write something down than it is to type it out. Okay? You can always voice dictate things in later, but writing it in is going to ingrain it. And this is can help you remember their charts, remember their names, remember their situations. Much better. I highly recommend doing that. Okay. When you have enough big of a why, okay. The how doesn't matter. Okay. Why always comes first, how comes second. Most people put how first. They try to figure out how they're going to do something before they're trying to figure out why they're going to do it. So once you know why, you just have to trust. If you have a deep enough why, the how will follow, the how will fall into place. So it's pretty cool how that happens. Activity is consistent action. Okay. It's not Just about taking action once or twice, you know, trying things, dabbling things. It's about activity, which is constant action. Okay? This is very important. And also he recommended that everyone listens to or reads Think and Grow Rich, but not just reads it, but actually does it because there's actual exercises in that book that can be very powerful. And I actually haven't done the exercises, at least not all of them. And so I'm going to go back and I'm going to do that. That's my commitment to myself. That book is consistently recommended and mentioned by the most people I know because that's the most recommended personal development book of all time that I can think of. And if you're thinking about reading it, if you haven't read it, it's not all about money. It's really more about mindset and creating your best life. And certainly we know that money is a great enabling tool to help you fulfill your purpose, your contribution, your growth, et cetera, et cetera. Okay, now one thing that he talks about is neuro associative conditioning, which is to know your outcome, know your reasons why you want to have that outcome. Then you take massive action, Notice what you're getting and change course. So know your outcome, know what it is you want. Have a good, you know, not a perfect idea, but a rough idea and be flexible with what that could be because it could become bigger. As you start working on this, know your reason why, you know that's the most important thing. So why am I doing this? That's what should be pulling you. Not pushing you, but pulling you. Then you take massive action. Okay? Notice what you're getting out of that massive action. Is it working? Is it not working? Are you growing? Is the business growing? Is the movement growing? Is the message growing? And usually if you're going to do massive action, something's going to grow. But then you have to figure out what you're getting out of it and if it's working for you. And then if it's not, you change course, you change what you're doing, but you keep sticking to your why you keep sticking to the outcome you're trying to create. The analogy is, and you've probably heard this before, but the plane is off course like 90 plus percent of the time. It's constantly adjusting because just a few degrees off, it's not flying in one direction the whole time. It's constantly just like your car. You're constantly, you don't just put the steering wheel straight and sit there, even on a straight Road, you're constantly just tweaking and tuning a little bit, okay? And so just a few even micro degrees off over the course of a few miles or a few thousand miles becomes a huge difference. So you're constantly going to want to be adjusting course. And every plane gets there because it's constantly adjusting course. It knows the outcome, it knows why it needs to do what it's doing. It knows has a sense of why it needs to get there. All these people need to see their families or get home to other families or go to work, whatever the case may be. So there's a big enough why and the how has been resolved. So keep that in mind. You stay the course. You just keep pushing along, keep plugging along, because the why is going to pull you. All progress comes from breaking patterns. So if you're stuck in the same pattern over and over and over again, then you're not going to have a breakthrough. Breakthroughs are going to come from new patterns that you install, new things that you start doing, going for a walk in the morning or spending some time with your kids, dancing, whatever it is. Breaking your patterns are going to allow you to have new breakthroughs. And if you break patterns with positive things, then there's a huge benefit to you. So change your patterns and you start changing your life, okay? And you know, the things that you're trying to change, it must change now, okay? It has to change now. And you can change it, right? It must change. You must change and you can change. You have to believe in that. 90% of all knowledge in the universe is available on the Internet, okay? But it's not information that's going to solve it. You've got to change. You've got to change course. You've got to make that slight tweak and it's not that painful, guys, if you're stuck in a pattern, whatever that pattern is, just break through it. I mean, just break through it with your physiology. Force yourself to do it, and pretty soon you'll be in love with it. You're going to love the way you feel, you're going to love the way you look, you're going to love the way your mind starts working. Whatever it is that's holding you back, just take that action. Massive action, guys. And it doesn't even have to be that massive. Massive sounds intimidating. It could be just going for a walk in the morning. If you're not doing that, or going for a walk in the evening at sunrise or sunset, do something small like that that has a plethora of benefits to your body, pleomorphic benefits to your body. What you can do and will do. Need to match. What you're capable of and what you're accomplishing. Need to match. And again, that's where your best life is. He talks about that five to thrive plan and I think this is great. We talked about it a little bit earlier. I talked about it. You know, your state is based on your physiology, your focus and your meaning. Okay? So that creates your state. Now the state that you're in then is being drawn to a more compelling future. So you want to create a better future to take this state into. And you know, the identity that you have of yourself is going to be what shapes your choices. So how you identify yourself in this state, state is going to influence the decisions that you make. So if you view yourself as a healthy, vibrant soul and being and you're living in alignment and on purpose, you're going to make a different set of decisions. And these decisions are going to be based on how you identify with yourself. When you're in a poor state, you're going to make decisions accordingly. It's hard to make healthy decisions in a low energy state. So you have to understand that and recognize that something's got to pull you, something's got to pull you. Now there's a big, big thing that Tony talks about that I want to cover with you here. In addition to everything else that we've covered, he talked about business success and he dropped some tidbits here, some big gems. Nothing granular of course, because there's 10,000 people in there and everyone's businesses are different, but these are the things that I, that I thought would be relevant to you as a functional medicine practitioner. So you know, he says that you've got to have like just this solid level of preeminence. You've got to have, you know, good storytelling, you've got to have great case studies, you've got to have, you know, a very, very stunning website. Okay. And you've got to have some sort of follow up sequence and way of segmenting people and following up with them in order for your business to be successful. So make sure you're doing that. And that's, I mean that's very, very high level. But you know, if you don't have those things, you want to start working towards those things. That's the secret to their success. They do, you know, hundreds of millions of dollars annually through all of his businesses. Billions of dollars a year annually, I believe. So, you know, Tony definitely knows what he's talking about. So high level stuff is preeminence. Make sure you've got content out there, make sure you've got a stunning website and you're capturing people's information and then you're following up with them and retargeting them in some way. Okay? So that's very important to understand. Now the thing I want to leave you with, because remember this was 50 hours of learning, so there's so much I learned. But the thing I want to leave you with on this episode is the three steps of mastery. So if your goal is mastery, you want mastery in your field, in your expertise, in becoming the best version of yourself, and in business mastery in personal health mastery, wealth mastery, life mastery, whatever it is, whatever you're trying to master, you've got to. There's a three step process to mastery. The first one is modeling. And so modeling means you find somebody who's doing what you want to be doing and you model them, you shadow them. That's the fastest way to learn and that's also immersion. So step two is immerse yourself. Immerse yourself in that mentorship, immerse yourself into that modeling, immerse yourself into that situation. Okay, so shadow a doctor or shadow a mechanic or whatever it is, an apprenticeship type of thing. So immerse yourself into that practice. And then when you do that, the next thing is to have spaced repetition. So model somebody else who's already doing it, immerse yourself into that space, into their space if you can, or into the situation, whatever it might be. And then you have spaced repetition. So you're consistently doing this, you're doing this periodically, not just once. It's not a one and done. It's like, think about it. If you're working out, you're going to role model a personal trainer or somebody else who's doing it. You're going to have somebody teach you the exercise, you're going to model them, then you're going to immerse yourself in the gym, and then you're going to go periodically to the gym. It's not just a one time thing. So for all of you that are trying to build, grow and scale your practices, if you're trying to get to a level of mastery, then there's three steps. Model somebody else, immerse yourself in their system, in their presence, in their tribe, and then space repetition. So consistent action that you're taking, that's going to be your road to mastery. So as a functional medicine practitioner, find a coach. It doesn't have to be me, but find a coach, somebody that resonates with you, that can allow you to do those three things. They can push you. They can call out your bullshit if they need to. They can identify your weaknesses, they can identify your strengths, they can identify your gifts. Sometimes somebody else believing you is so much more important than you believing in yourself, because that pulls you, it inspires you. We did this great exercise, man. You just had to kind of be there. But we did this great exercise at the end where you're walking through your perfect home. You're visualizing, you know, somebody walking through your home, and they're looking at your home and they're just awe inspired, and they're saying to you, I knew you could do it. I knew you could do it. So it sounds, like, really, really cheesy, but when you're in that moment visualizing that, it's such a powerful exercise, okay? So if you want to get masterful at something, if you want to create your absolute best outcome, then you've got to model somebody and visualize what it is that you want. Very, very acutely, very strongly. You have to feel it, like, really deep inside of you. And sometimes it takes being around other people who are trying to do that in order to get there, into that state, into that emotion, but something that really pulls you, and then you immerse yourself into it, and then you just keep at it. Spaced repetition. Okay? And that's what I'm happy to do for you. I know there's other people that are happy to do that for you, but that's very important to your growth and the growth of this entire functional medicine movement. So there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. These are some of my big takeaways, and I've got so many more notes, but I want to honor your time and I also want to save some of this for my upcoming presentation that I'm doing at my Mastermind in July. So if you're listening to this, it might be too late, but that's what I'm prepping for as well. So super excited. Love to you all. Have an amazing rest of your day. Talk to you soon.
