He began by tracking a chronic health condition, then expanded to Peace Corps work and his first job, letting the system grow organically rather than attempting to boil the ocean from day one.

How do I start building a second brain? What are the sort of different elements? The way that I would really recommend people do it is to not— usually when I say build a second brain, they want to immediately engineer this very sophisticated, all-encompassing system. And I really understand that because that's kind of what I have. When I do my demos and I show how I do things, my second brain started as a little kind of seedling. Then for a few more years, I only used it to like do my first job. It grew so slowly, expanded from this one little use case to now I use it for basically everything. But you cannot start like that. That is trying to boil the ocean. That is trying to skip to the end. So what I tell people is, what is one project in your life or one goal or one arena of your life that you just want to be more effective?
