In this short, first‑person monologue, the speaker—presented as a dog lounging on a porch—reflects on the surrounding world while waiting for dinner. The dog notes the wind, birds holding a "meeting," a missing companion named Pumpkin, a persistently errant squirrel, a predictable mailman, and a rabbit that never learns. He draws a parallel between animal behavior and human "strategy," suggesting that simply sitting still and observing reveals true patterns. The monologue ends with a humorous self‑labeling of his "work" as lying in wait for dinner.

Dad says I'm thinking. I'm not thinking. I'm sitting on the porch absorbing information. The wind's doing wind stuff. The birds are holding some kind of meeting. Pumpkin is missing, which means he's either doing something stupid or about to do something stupid. Every now and then I open one eye, look around, and realize something. The same squirrel keeps making the same mistakes. The same mailman takes the same route. The same rabbit never learns. Funny how that's true for humans too. They call it strategy; I call it sitting still long enough to notice what's actually happening. Anyway, I should probably get back to work. By work I mean laying here until dinner appears.
