In this YouTube video, Nashville‑based singer‑songwriter Sarah Spencer performs her brand‑new song “Sunflower.” After a brief introduction, she sings the track, which features an uplifting, folk‑Americana vibe and lyrics that encourage perseverance and self‑belief, using the sunflower as a metaphor for growth. Following the performance, Sarah explains the song’s origins: the chorus had been stuck in her head for over a year before she finally fleshed out the verses using a simple chord progression (C9‑D‑E). She reveals that the song was written for multiple audiences – her future children, a close friend who was struggling while chasing her dreams, and anyone working toward personal goals. Sarah emphasizes the emotional resonance of the metaphor, urging listeners to stay grounded and keep their “sweet face” toward the clouds. The video concludes with a call‑to‑action, inviting viewers to support her on Patreon for more music and updates.

Hey y'all, my name is Sarah Spencer, and I'm a singer-songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee. And I have some new music for you today. I just finished this song a week or so ago, and I'm really excited to share with you. Stick around after the playing of the song, because I tell you a little bit about how it was written and why it was written and who it was written for. Also, please forgive me if I'm not looking at you at the camera. I've got my lyrics pulled up, so I'm going to be like sneaking peeks at my lyrics. I'm not just like looking at myself the entire time like, "Oh my god, look how pretty I am!" Like, no, that's not what's happening. So I'm gonna play it for you right now. I hope you love it.
It's called "Sunflower." You're gonna get there, but it's gonna take some patience, some reinin', some bitin'. Don't be afraid to rush into mistakes. Maybe stay prepared. Solid ground. Don't let nobody tell you where you're gonna grow now. Keep your sweet face forward into the clouds, and if you need direction, remember you're a sunflower.
Some days it's gonna take a lot out of your spirit.
Spirit, keep on moving. You're going to hate feeling frustrated and over it. It's okay, you're supposed to, 'cause you've got places to be and these days are your guests only. Baby, stay relaxed. Solid ground. Don't let nobody tell you where you're gonna grow. Keep your sweet face pointed to the clouds. And if you need direction, remember you're a sunflower. You're a sunflower. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You ain't gotta be cool to be in with the crowd. Don't be cheap with the truth and let it fall down. Keep your sweet face pointed to the clouds. And if you need direction, remember. Oh, if you need a little reminder, you're a sunflower. I know you know that That was Sunflower, brand new song.
Okay, so I want to tell you a little bit about like how the song was written, where the idea came from, who it was written for. So Sunflower was actually a chorus that I had in my head for a long time. I've kept the chorus almost exactly the way you hear it now for over a year maybe, but I didn't have the rest of the song fleshed out. I really liked the idea, I really liked the title, I thought it could be a good song, but I just didn't have a direction figured out for the verses yet. So I kind of hung on to it, it hung out in my hook book for a long time, and just this past week I started just noodling around. I went up to this C9 or whatever this is, and D, and I was like, "Oh, that, that could work," and then back to the E. I'm like, oh, you know, that actually, that sounds right. That sounds like it flows and like it makes sense. And then I learned this. I don't know what this is, but it sounds cool. I don't really, I'm sure it has a name, I just don't know what it is. So lyrically, what's the song about? Who did I write it for? Well, the chorus, the original chorus that I had back in the day, a year or so ago, I thought, okay, well, this is gonna be a song for my future children. I wanna write a song for them. I don't know them yet, but I want to write something to pick them up, you know, when they're feeling down on themselves. I also wrote it with a friend of mine in mind who was going through just kind of a rough time. She's been working her butt off, working really hard to try and make her dreams come true, her goals happen, and she is one of the most kick-ass people I know, and even she was kind of struggling with just feeling really crappy one day, and I'm like, "Homegirl, I'm writing you a song right now." And that was literally, like, we were like literally like texting each other on the computer, like, as I was writing the verses to this song. So I was like, "I'm writing this for you right now." And also a little bit for anybody really who is pursuing something that they want in life, their goals, their dreams, whatever it is that, like, gets you fired up and out of bed in the morning, and you're just, like, working really hard to get there. This is for you. This song is written for you. It's not easy being in love with something and having to chase it and devote all of your energy and your free time to like making that goal happen. And the people that do it are incredible. I look up to y'all so much. So this is for you. It's called Sunflower. Thanks for listening. My name is Sarah Spencer. I put out new videos and new music on my Patreon page. It's patreon.com/sarahspencer. Until next time, bye! I'm not a sailor. I don't— I don't sail.
