Divorce Mediation Improves Co-Parenting Relationships - Scott Levin Chief PeaceKeeper™

Scott Levin compares divorce mediation to students creating school rules together instead of having them imposed. When parents negotiate their own co-parenting agreement through mediation, they invest in the outcome and actually follow it, unlike court orders that lack that buy-in.

Hey everyone, Scott Levin, Chief Peacekeeper. Does anyone question the ineffectiveness of a school administrator putting together a series of rules on their own, putting those rules into a rule book, and handing them out to their students with a stern warning, you better abide by these or else? Students aren't going to take ownership over those rules if they're dictated to them in that way. What about if the students were to come up with their own set of rules? To do the painstakingly difficult work of negotiating, directly communicating with each other, searching their hearts, crying a little, determining what matters most to them, and questioning their own positions? That's the difficult, hard work of mediation. Showing empathy to each other, understanding where each other are coming from. If you were to come up with the same exact set of rules but done in that way, both parties are going to take ownership and enforce those rules because they'll have a desire to. That is what the difference between mediation and litigation is in for your divorce. Relying on a judge to issue you an edict isn't going to result in you or the other side having willingness to abide by those rules. It's only through mediation where you're both interacting and you're both investing your time and your thoughts and your money to come up with those rules. That's where the willingness to buy in and own them and live by them comes from. And that's one of the huge benefits of mediation for divorce. Thank you.
