Ryan teaches the Russian kettlebell swing for people who already know deadlifts. Start with feet shoulder-width apart, hinge at the hips, hike the kettlebell to your hips, then drive upward while staying tall. Keep your glutes and hamstrings tight throughout.

Today we're going to go over the kettlebell swing. Now ideally you have already mastered the deadlift and the Romanian deadlift here. Today again we're going over the Russian swing, so we're going to go to about shoulder height, keeping everything nice and locked. I'm going to start at a shoulder-width stance. I like to turn my toes out slightly. Now if you have a wider squat stance, it's not going to be super wide, but I definitely don't want you standing under your hips. From here we're going to slightly bend those knees. Making sure that kettlebell is about a foot away from my body, and I'm gonna hinge from the hips, trying to keep my knees as close to over my ankles as possible. Now my whole body is nice and loaded. I can feel that tension through my hamstrings, and I'm gonna reach down towards that kettlebell in front of me, and I'm gonna tilt it towards my body. From here, I'm squeezing those lats, packing them down. There you go. I'm gonna hike that kettlebell towards my hips. I'm gonna stand up driving my hips tall, not forward. What it looks like— The reason I say tall, not forward, is because we never want to lean back in a kettlebell swing. I want to get as high as I possibly can, keeping my glutes nice and tense, and using my hips and my hamstrings and my stomach to control that weight to that horizontal movement.
