No Integrity = Bad Hamburger (Vegans Included)
9 Aug 2023 · 9 min
Sean Clayton (Daily Alchemy) examines integrity as a personal, cause-centered practice rather than a merely social/moral label. Drawing on his past (incarceration, suicide attempt) he reframes integrity as fidelity to one’s own loving commitments: when you break promises to yourself reality ‘shifts’ and negative effects cascade (missed tasks, bad food, tech failures). He cites ho'oponopono (taking responsibility for everything) and a passage from A Course in Miracles to argue that love’s extension — not fear-based compliance — is the locus of true integrity. He uses examples (a day that went off-rails and a gym/fiance anecdote that led to a “bad hamburger”) to show how owning responsibility heals relationships and restores aligned outcomes. The episode closes with a call to make self-integrity non-negotiable.

On this episode of Daily Alchemy, we're going to talk a little bit about integrity. Now, I used to struggle with this concept of integrity. And for some of those of you that knew me in former versions of my life would have said, Sean, you got a problem with this. Hence I landed in a lot of the wrong crowds, ended up being incarcerated, was so far out of integrity, I tried to take my life. So society is basically tied integrity to moral compass and to being righteous in society and making sure that you're actually aligned from a societal perspective. And so if you're out of integrity, that means you're not doing things by societal standards and therefore you're looked at as a bad person. And that's what I really struggled with because most of the societal standards that we adhere to are very much so out of integrity. They're built off of somebody else's fear cycle. They're built off of a lack of expansion of love. And within that you end up in this really awkward space to where you're working to stay in integrity of somebody else's lack of integrity, and therefore you're out of integrity. It's like this really awkward, vicious cycle is what I found. So what came to me the other day as I kept not completing things that I said I was going to do. And I was like, it was a simple day. I was going to get up, go to the gym, I was going to do some red light therapy, I was going to go to, you know, kind of a self care day. And I didn't do that. And then I ended up missing some meetings. I had some things on my to do list to knock out And I got three of the 10 things done. And so if I made a commitment to myself out of the integrity of self, now this is where integrity really lands for me. Because out of the integrity of self and I didn't complete those things and what starts to happen, I create a ripple effect of non integrity in my life. I create a ripple effect of exponential circumstances outside of myself that start to shatter the reality that I live in. So I'm going to repeat that again. I start to shatter the reality that I live in when I am not in integrity. So the illusion that forms outside of me when I am not intentional with my thoughts and in my execution from the word that I give myself creates a completely alternative reality. And the reality got so weird that day that the weather got odd. The food that I was eating was horrible. In places that I've gone before that the food is like delicious. The food and like simple things like a hamburger and the food was just nasty and then all kind of other issues. The TV didn't work. When I tried to watch TV because I was like, I just started to surrender and give up. I'm like, I gotta do something else. I couldn't get out any content, emails weren't coming through. And then like all of these other weird ass disastrous things started to happen like in slack channels for work. It's like, what is going on? And then I realized that it was all on me. And there's this saying called ho' oponopono where you take responsibility for everything in your life. And it's, it's a, it's a Hawaiian practice. And I'm not going to go into saying like this is that Hawaiian practice. But if we go through the process of taking total responsibility for everything in our life and what happens is that we have to back it up a little bit and understand what the cause of that responsibility is. So the cause of all the effects in our life have everything to do with us. You are the one common standard. You're it. Everything else around you is variable and changes. No matter where I look, no matter what I'm doing, no matter where I'm at, I am the only thing that's consistent. Now sometimes you'll pass by something else that was there before. That's great. But even if you look at it and then you look away from it, it's no longer there. It's that simple. What is always there? You are always there. So what that means is that everything expands from the perspective of self. So if everything expands from the perspective of self, then the reality that you're creating is from the perspective of self. And if you are out of integrity, then what happens with your reality? It is out of integrity. It's that simple. It's that instant. It's so damn instant that literally you could love a restaurant, be out of integrity with yourself and all of a sudden the restaurant sucks, right? Because you have now fractured the dimensions of your life into two different portals. Like you're in one portal and another portal. And now you're in this other alternative portal. That is not the reality of your integrous self. It's the reality of your non integra self. So this is very similar to that concept of heaven and hell. And in that concept of heaven and hell, there's one portal, another portal. It's when we choose the expansion of love or we choose the compression of fear. The choice is really simple. It's not about being in integrity to everybody around you. It's about you being in integrity to yourself. And if you say you're going to do something, do it. But it should always be done out of love. If you want to be in integrity in a fear based cycle, then cool. What you'll create is an entire life of fear. It'll be very much so on that roadmap. And oftentimes when we don't complete things, we are in integrity of fear. We are in integrity of not completing things because we are not in integrity of our loving versions of self. I was reading this chapter in Course in Miracles and it says love is extension. To withhold the smallest gift is not to know love's purpose. Love offers everything forever. Hold back but one belief, one offering and love is gone. Because you asked for a substitute to take its place. So what that means to me is that if I am in integrity of love, then I am offering everything forever. I am not withholding any of the gifts of myself and I am on constant follow through in this physical plane of sitting at the seat of cause that allows for all of the effects in my life to be in full extension of the love of myself. And I'm not allowing for substitutions of fear to take its place. Because in the absence of peace, there's war. In the absence of love, there's fear. So we have to stay so true to ourselves from the integrity of where we action from that the truth always just is. And I'll give you a few other examples around this. And what's really interesting is when we fall out of integrity, it's generally because we blame some other person, which is why we have conflicts in relationships. This will actually heal relationships instantly. So I'll give you an example of me and my fiance. One morning we both woke up and I wanted to go to the gym and she didn't. She said, will you wait and go later? I said sure. And we didn't go later. So I basically had set an intention of myself to go in the morning. I broke my integrity right then and there. My day ended up kind of going off the rails at that point. I then fell into the potentiality of the integrity within her. So now I'm holding her to be integrous of the things that she is going to do. Then later on the day got more off rails for the both of us. And then we didn't go to the gym at all. So now we're both out of integrity of going to the gym. This was the day we had the bad Hamburger. My choice to not be in integrity cascaded into waiting on her integrity to pull through. And then when her integrity didn't flow through, now we're both out of integrity and now we both have a bad meal. Simple example of it. But had I said, you know what, I'm going to be true to myself right now and go to the gym and do what I'm going to do, it might have been like, oh, that feels selfish. Now we oftentimes say there's a consideration of others that we want to put into account of this that allows us to hold in the integrity of the relationship. But that requires preemptive communication. For you to say, hey, I'm going to go to the gym tomorrow at this time, would you like to come? We both say yay or nay, and then we both decide on it. If I start flowing out of my integrity because that person automatically shows up, now I'm in a reactive mode. Reaction is a lack of integrity. Response is full integrity. So when I'm responding out of love, I'm in integrity. When I'm in reaction in a moment, when I get into my sympathetic nervous system and I'm in fight, flight, hide, I'm not in integrity. There's nothing around me right now that I am creating that allows me to fight, flight, hide or run. There are situations in life that denote those things and of course they cause reactions in each of us. Those reactions are healthy. It's a good thing to go through, right? It's part of opening up a new portal to step into a new dimension for yourself. And at which point it's not a place that we want to live, but it's a place that sometimes is necessary and oftentimes when we take full responsibility for it, we see why we even created that for ourselves to love ourselves more. It's not a place that we want to stay and it's not a rhythm that we're building. But the thing that we have to do is constantly stay in full integrity of ourselves, no matter what. It has to be a complete non negotiable in your life. And when we do that, the illusion of the world shows up significantly different because we are creating the rhythm. We are at the seat of cause and the effects that flow outside of us are always in love. Thank you so much for tuning in and I love you.
