In this replay Shally Steckerl walks viewers through the fundamentals of building a Google Custom Search Engine (CSE). He shows how to create a CSE at google.com/cse, explains the three core components—site lists, refinements/labels (including faceted search), and synonyms— and demonstrates practical setup steps such as bulk site import, keyword weighting, image and safe‑search toggles, region/language settings, and advanced filters. Throughout the session he uses live examples (LinkedIn, a nonprofit CLO search, Raptim 100 list) to illustrate adding sites, creating refinements that either restrict searches to a collection of sites or inject additional keywords, and building a custom dictionary of synonyms for job titles, organization types, and other entities. He also covers removing unwanted sites via patterns, troubleshooting refinements, and hints at upcoming deeper dives into patterns, advanced settings, schema.org integration, and entity search. The talk ends with a brief Q&A (synonyms do not require quotation marks) and a preview of the next four episodes in the series.
