In this live session Shally Steckerl explains how recruiters can gain a first‑mover advantage by detecting company layoffs before they become widely known. He walks through practical techniques: crafting precise Google queries (using varied layoff‑related terms, industry or city filters, and date‑range tools), turning those queries into Google Alerts or RSS feeds, and avoiding common pitfalls (e.g., relying on a single keyword or default relevance sorting). Shally then demonstrates a custom Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) he built with two refinements—news sites (TechCrunch, Crunchbase, etc.) and dedicated layoff sites (layoffs.fyi, thelayoff.com, trueup.io/layoffs). He shows how to add extra query terms, disable site compression, and use facet refinements to quickly identify relevant results. Finally, he shares how to embed the CSE and related feeds into a Start.me personal dashboard, adding widgets for the CSE, Twitter timelines (e.g., @layoffs_fyi), and similar‑site searches, creating a consolidated “layoff dashboard” for continuous monitoring. The session ends with a brief Q&A invitation and a call to start sourcing laid‑off talent.
