Shanli Liu argues that effective managers sell ideas rather than tell employees what to do. A manager who explains why work matters and makes people feel essential inspires better results than one who just hands out a checklist.
I know if you're a good manager. So the best managers in the world, they sell, they don't tell. So think about this, right? There's one manager and they're telling you, do a checklist 1 through 10, and they're like, go do this, go do that, et cetera, et cetera. Versus the other manager who's like, let me tell you why what we do is so important and why what we do is amazing and why you are so important. Manager number 2 is the manager that's going to succeed. And that's because you always want to be thinking that when you're talking to your employees, you want to sell them, not tell them.
