Trying to win arguments damages trust. Instead, stay curious and ask questions to understand what's really going on beneath surface behavior. A full glass can't receive new ideas.

Here are 3 things I've learned about communication. Number 1, never win an argument. When you win, you lose so much more, like their trust, their respect, the chance to connect with them. When you win, congrats, what do you've got? You've won awkward silence when you pass them down the hall. You've won first up to apologize. When your goal is to win an argument, you will lose the relationship. Number 2, have something to learn, not something to prove. The harder you push against them to prove you're right, the more hardened they'll become against you. Think of it this way: you can't pour new thoughts into a glass that's already full. You have to be curious enough to let them pour it all out before you can fill it up. And number 3, the person you see is not the person you're talking to. Everybody has a surface and a depth, and you get to that by turning your statements into questions. For example, "That was rude. Did you mean for that to be rude?" "You're interrupting me. Can you hear that you're interrupting me?" Questions help you get to the person behind the surface. So try that and follow me.
