A 10-week study of 16 overweight men found that combining treadmill running with abdominal exercises reduced belly fat more than cardio alone, even when both groups burned the same calories. This challenges the idea that you can't lose fat from specific areas.

Everyone wants to lose belly fat, but most people believe you can't target fat loss in specific areas. However, new research challenges that idea. Oh, how exciting! Recent studies suggest that pairing ab exercises with cardio may actually help reduce belly fat more effectively. This study looked into whether spot reduction—the idea that exercising a specific body part can burn fat in that area—is possible. For 10 weeks, 16 overweight men were divided into 2 groups. One did both treadmill running and specific abdominal exercises like crunches and torso twists, while the other just did treadmill running. Both groups burned a similar amount of calories, but the group that combined running with ab exercises lost more fat from the trunk or abdomen area. The results suggest that combining cardio with specific muscle exercises may lead to more targeted fat loss in the trained area.
