Lindsay Zahner documents a week of weight loss after turning 40, dropping from 130.3 lb to 129.4 lb through a 500-calorie daily deficit. She shows how a pastrami sandwich spiked her weight temporarily, explains the math behind losing roughly one pound of fat per week, and stresses daily weigh-ins to spot trends, not single numbers.

Okay, I need to take you on the journey that I had this week of losing 1 pound after age 40. So starting at the beginning of the week, 130.3. You can see everything's starting to look good. Went down to 129.2 right there. Holy crap, I was so excited that morning. But then I had a pastrami sandwich while I was watching the World Cup, and look what happened. 131. I shot up 2 pounds from water weight, from sodium. This is why the scale doesn't tell the full story when it comes to your weight loss journey, and also why you shouldn't just weigh yourself when you're feeling emotional. If you're gonna do it, do it every single day so you can see the fluctuations. But if the trend is downward, then you know you're doing things right. So you can see, yes, I started at 130.3 pounds, and then by the end of the week, hallelujah, 129.4. So 0.9 pounds. And that was by tracking my food and being in a roughly 500-calorie deficit from my maintenance. 500 calories times 7 is 3,500 calories, which is roughly 1 pound of fat. So if you wanna lose pure fat, make sure you're in that calorie deficit and make sure you are strength training to keep the muscle that you have because you may or may not lose 1 pound of pure fat or a little bit of muscle in there. You lessen those chances of losing muscle if you continue to stimulate those muscles. So keep strength training and put yourself in a moderate deficit and everything should work out well.
