This simple test from Brazil can predict your longevity. It's called the Sit and Rise test, and it takes less than 30 seconds. Developed in 1990, this test was designed to measure flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination, all major indicators of healthy aging. If you have bad knees or hips, don't try this at home. Try it with a medical professional present. Here's how to do it. Take off your shoes. Start standing. Cross your legs and sit down on the floor. Now stand back up without using your hands, knees, or elbows for support. You start with 10 points. Subtract 1 point for each time you use a hand, knee, forearm, or support. Lose a half a point for wobbles or loss of balance. For every point you get, there's a 21% decrease in all-cause mortality. If you're over 50 and score a perfect 10, pat yourself on the back because you are in the minority. Score an 8 to 10? You're in great shape. Score under 8? Research shows you're more likely to experience mobility issues. Score a 3 or less and your risk of dying is 5 times greater over the next 5 years. The good news? You can improve your score with strength, balance, and mobility work. Start now. Your future self will thank you.
