Become a Notary | Signing Agent Basics | Definitions That Every Notary Must Know Part 2

LaTonya Johnson presents part two of a notary-focused glossary aimed at notary public loan signing agents. She defines terms (affirmation; apostille; attorney-in-fact; authentication), explains the Hague Convention’s apostille as a streamlined international notarization certificate, and offers practical advice that apostille services can be lucrative (mentions up to $350 in Texas). The work is an instructional monologue for notaries to learn terminology and consider offering specialized services.

Hey, this is TJ with solutions by tj. And I'm back at it with part two of words that you need to know as a notary. Words and tools of the trade. So this is part two, and I have a whole bunch more to go. As I said, let this play on autoplay while you're doing, while you're driving or doing whatever you need to do around the house, washing clothes, whatever you're doing. Let this play so you can get these words into your spirit and, and know them by heart. As soon as somebody says it, you know what's going on. That's important. Okay, let us get started.
Affirmation spoken. Solemn promise on one's personal honor with no reference to a supreme being that is made before a notary in relation to a jurat or other notorial act or as. As a notorial act in its own right.
An apostille authenticating certificate required by the Hague Convention that replaces a traditional chain of certificates. Now, that Hague Convention is super duper important. It's where various countries, including the United States, came together and created a streamlined way to notarize various documents from foreign countries. And it's an agreement that they have. Now, where I am in Texas, notary public loan signing agents are making up to $350 just doing these. So it's a lot of money in. In this look up in your area apostilles, right? Let this be one thing that you add as something that you offer and specialize in, because there's a lot of money in it. Just like in notarizing will.
Attorney, in fact, a person who has authority to sign for another person.
Authentication, the process of proving the genuineness of the signature and seal of a notary or other official, usually through attachment of a certificate of authority.
Awareness, being able to understand what is happening and to act responsibly. And just let me say that when you're in a closing, it is your responsibility to make sure that the person is acting of their own willingness and within a sound mind. So say, for instance, you have an elderly person who seems like they are unwilling to sign the documents, but they have a child there who's kind of forcing them along. It's your responsibility to stop that closing. Or you have another individual and they seem jittery, they seem on edge. You ask them that question specifically, are you signing this of your own will? And even if they say yes, but they seem jittery, it is your responsibility to stop that closing.
