Sonya Shelton argues in a short YouTube video that leaders are not simply born or created but are "honed." She emphasizes that wanting to lead (desire) is the first prerequisite, that many people prefer to remain individual contributors, and that businesses sometimes mistakenly promote technically strong contributors into leadership roles they do not want, producing weak leaders.

Are leaders born or are leaders created? I wouldn't say they're born or created. I would say they're honed. And the reason is because. Well, first of all, you have to want to be. And there are people who, you know, they're perfectly happy being an individual contributor, being somebody who follows a strong leader. They want to be engaged. They want their purpose and their superpower leveraged, but they don't necessarily want to lead other people. And there's nothing wrong with that. I think a lot of businesses try to push people who are good at their job into leadership positions when they don't really want to, and then they. They're not good leaders because they don't really want to. So I think that, you know, the first step is desire, right? So do you want. Do you want to be a leader? Do you want to lead other people? And then I think everyone has natural leadership capability. Even if you don't have a leadership position, if you want people to follow you and you're excited about what you're doing, they will.
