In this spoken piece for Best Holistic Life Magazine, Theresa Byrne introduces her article on the "inner bully," a subtle, often non‑verbal self‑sabotaging feeling that differs from the classic inner critic. She explains how the inner bully fuels procrastination and self‑defeating patterns, drawing on her own experience presenting a TED/TEDx talk that highlighted the lack of language for this sensation. Byrne invites listeners to read her magazine article and take a free online assessment to identify which inner bully dynamics are active for them. She uses a martial‑arts analogy—knowing the enemy is better than being unaware—to emphasize the importance of recognizing and confronting the inner bully in order to reclaim personal power.

Hi, my name is Theresa Byrne, and I am so grateful to be writing in this month's issue for Best Holistic Life. What a great magazine. The article I've written is on the inner bully, and it is all about how we beat ourselves up, the little ways and the big ways that we stop ourselves from having the lives that we want. And truly, it's up to us, and our minds can either help us or they can harm us, and we get to choose. The inner bully is something I'm incredibly familiar with. I did a TED Talk, TEDx Talk that got moved to TED.com, and it really struck a nerve because we didn't have words for that feeling of inside of us and that blech and that way that we feel about something. If you avoid something, you're procrastinating, and it creates this like, blech, I don't wanna. And it's, it's not quite as verbal as the inner critic. It's more of a feeling and it can often adrenalize us. So I really invite you to check out the article. If you're interested in seeing which kinds of inner bully are activated for you, there is a free assessment on my website. You can check out the link there. But why not figure it out? In martial arts, we often say that the enemy you know is much better than the enemy you don't. And if the inner bully is running around inside the back of your head, unbidden and unseen, it's going to wreak havoc. So Stop self-defeating patterns. Find who and what your inner bully is so that you can take your power back. Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the article.
