Most of us learn to apologize to others but never to ourselves. Write down specific mistakes you regret, confirm what you learned from each one, then say "I forgive myself for..." and let it go. The point is releasing guilt once the lesson sticks.

I have a question for you. How do you let yourself off the hook? What do I mean by that? If you've messed up with a friend or a family member or a coworker or a boss, a colleague, or anyone, what would you typically do? You would apologize. But what do you do if you mess up and it's bugging you? How many of the past regrets or things that you've done do you hang on to? How do you let that go? We are taught as kids how to apologize to other people. Say I'm sorry, or will you accept my apology? But what do we do when it's us? I have a suggestion. Create a list of things that you would like to forgive yourself for, things you want to let yourself off the hook for, things that you want to forgive because you learned the lesson that you needed to learn on whatever that topic is. So instead of beating yourself up, Figure out how to apologize, how to let it go, how to release yourself from carrying the burden. You did the bad thing or the thing, the negative thing in the first place, and now you keep carrying it with you. You got to set it down to be able to move forward. So how do you do that? Create a list. I actually have a forgiveness list, and if you would like it, let me know. I'll send it out to you. But it's basically simple idea. I forgive myself for, and then you let it go. And you say, I forgive myself for whatever it is. I forgive myself for speaking harshly. I forgive myself for forgetting something. I forgive myself for fill in the blank. Any negative thing that you've done, if you've learned the lesson, let the action go. If you've learned the consequence, if you've taken it in and you're not going to do it again, Allow yourself that opportunity, that grace of apologizing to yourself. We're not taught how to do that. So one of my favorite tools as a mindset coach is figuring out a way to let ourselves forgive ourselves for misjudgment, mistakes, epic fails, upsets, things that we wish we would have done differently. Now, the only reason to hold on to that item is so that we learn from it. If you've learned from it, check. Now allow yourself to let it go knowing you'll do better in the future. Let me know how it goes.
