Woodwell Climate @ COP29 | What is COP?

COP is where countries negotiate climate action and set targets under the Paris Agreement. Governments must submit new climate targets to the UN in February, and Woodwell Climate works to bring scientific findings into these negotiations to raise ambition.

Cops are a platform where the world comes together in different ways, in terms of the international negotiations, of course, but then also here you see people from all countries over the world converging on this big issue of climate change, and that's a really powerful thing. And here you can see people and countries who disagree about a lot of things actually coming together and being determined to find some kind of solutions through this extremely complex issues and through their differences. You have thousands of people organizing pavilions, doing side events, finding ways to collaborate. So cops create this sense of momentum in the global climate effort where you really feel and it's communicated to the world that this issue is being taken very seriously and that enables kind of more action at many different levels. Significant. Since the Paris agreement in 2015, the cops have mainly been about basically operationalizing the Paris Agreement, putting it into action, finding ways to help governments and other players to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement next year. In February, governments must submit their new climate targets to the un. They must announce to the world what they're going to do in the next five years on climate change. And this COP is the moment where countries need to kind of find the trust to maximize the ambition of those climate targets. So our priority is, of course, to bring the science and the research findings that we've generated into these platforms and try to highlight certain key messages based on the science.
