Travia Steward left teaching to become a full-time coach after realizing she was settling. She defines settling as accepting mediocrity in relationships, work, health, and finances, and argues the belief "I am meant for more" is what breaks the pattern. Her Limitless program opens August 1 with a founding-member offer.

Happy podcast Tuesday. Podcast Tuesday. Today I wanna talk about the one belief that helped me to step outside and demand more of myself by stepping outta my teaching job, starting this coaching business, speaking on stages, and becoming an authority on reinvention transformation outside of the classroom, but in real life. And that one belief was, and still is today, that I am meant for more. I know that sounds, you know, cheesy. And I know you guys have heard me talk about this before, but I really wanna speak to the gravity, the importance, the profound impact that that belief has had on my life, because I think about it each moment. In each decision that I make. When I was working with students every day, you know, helping them become the best performer they can be, I was really good at that job. I was really great at it, honestly. But I knew in those moments when I no longer enjoyed it, that there was more for me than just that, than retiring as a teacher. I knew in that moment, in lots of moments, that I was meant to do something much bigger than that. Something that would really make a difference in this world. So in taking that leap of faith and starting my own coaching business, it wasn't easy. It's still not easy today, but I never gave up and I don't give up on myself. And I fall deeper into the belief that I am meant for more. And eventually my business started to take off. It's continuing to grow, right? Speaking on stages, doing workshops, all the things. Until I became an authority on reinvention transformation. Now, I'm not telling you all of this to brag. I'm telling you this because I want you to know that you too are meant for more. And you may not know what that more looks like yet, but it's there. It's in, you know, the crevices of your subconscious thoughts. It's in the background. It's that little nudge that you feel that this isn't as good as it gets. And if you believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams, you know what, you'll eventually find it. You'll eventually find, define, and create what that more is. So right now I want to talk about what happens when we settle. And whenever I hear the word settle, you know, or— and maybe it's not just the word settle, but it's something someone is saying in a conversation. And whenever I recognize that they're settling, it's like my internal, like, red lights go off. Like, there's an alarm that goes off in my head because my purpose on this earth, I really believe, it's to empower and inspire as many people as possible to live the highest vision of their lives without settling. That is my purpose statement. That is how I walk through the world. So when I hear people giving examples of settling, you know, yeah, this is what I deserve, you know what, at least it's a job, you know what, at least I got someone to come home to, That's what happens is we're settling. When we begin to settle, we, we settle for mediocrity. We settle for our dreams not being fulfilled. Now, this also can possibly lead to like depression, anxiety, other type of mental health problems. And when we settle, we may never achieve that full potential that we dreamt of as a kid, as a young adult. We will never experience the joy and the satisfaction that comes from living a life that is true to you, right? Not a life that others expected of you. One of the 9 regrets. And so you may also end up feeling unfulfilled and dissatisfied with your life every single day because we're not doing anything about it. And so when we settle, That is like a significant cost on your life. It can cost you more happiness. It can cost you your health. It can cost you your overall sense of purpose in your relationships, your career, the money that you earn, you know, because these— the dangers and the impact of settling are not just physical or financial. When you settle in life, you're giving up on your dreams and your potential. You're giving up on your sense of purpose and your connection to something greater than yourself. It also, you know, looks like lost opportunities, lost relationships because you didn't take that chance, lost time that you could have had doing something that you really loved. And when you settle, you are missing out on a chance to live the life that is truly fulfilling and meaningful to you, not to others, but to you. And so I want you to think for a minute. How many times in the last couple of weeks have you found yourself in a situation where you thought, why am I putting up with this? Why am I still here at this place in this job? Why am I constantly negotiating and getting the bare minimum? The moment when I recognized that I was settling in my teaching job was I was a high school teacher in Texas. And, you know, honestly, I, you know, I can say it, there was a difference in the students that I worked with in Texas compared to the students I worked with in Arizona. Now, this isn't like, you know, every single student, but the average student in Texas showed up wanting to learn. And they challenge me to be better and better and better and better every single day, every single year. And I love that. When I moved to Arizona, every year I found myself— now there were some very special students that I worked with at, at, at, in Arizona at Skyline, you know, very gifted, very talented, but that wasn't the average. Those students were the exception. I found that the average was students who wanted me to lower the bar, students who wanted, you know, a reward for just showing up, even if they didn't complete the assignment, even if they didn't, you know, follow through on, on the commitment that they were supposed to follow through on. And I found myself settling. Okay, I guess I got to keep lowering the bar. And it wasn't until One of my students, actually it was Riley Rambo, who said, you know, I miss the old steward. And when he said that, I did an introspective review of shit, I miss the old steward because I had began settling. And among other things, that was one of the things that allowed me and helped me to take a look on the inside. You know, what am I doing here? I'm better than this. What am I doing? Why am I settling? And again, every single school year came around and I found myself negotiating. Well, you know, it's a job. Well, I get a paycheck, I get summers off, which doesn't even really feel like summer's off anymore, right? Because it's not even 3 months, it was like 2 months barely. But I found myself settling and negotiating for that bare minimum as well. Now If you're negotiating in any part of your life, I wanna remind you that you too have a choice. You can either settle for less than what you deserve, or you can start believing in yourself today, this moment, and start living the life that you were meant to live. The choice is absolutely yours. So as I wrap up this episode, I 100% believe that each one of us walking on this earth is meant for more. We were created, we were made for more than what we all are settling for. And this thought, this belief can no longer be optional. Your dreams and goals do not have to be optional, and they won't be when you believe that you are meant for more. But it's absolutely up to you to believe in yourself and take that action that follows.. And if you do, and when you do, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. So what are you waiting for? Stop settling for the mediocre. Stop settling for the bottom of the barrel. Stop settling for lackluster relationship. Stop settling for a job you don't— you no longer enjoy. Stop settling for being the last person that people think about. To invite them out to have a good time. Stop negotiating, stop settling, and start living the life that you were meant to live.
