Alopecia? Watch This Transformation… You’ll Be Speechless 😭

Stylist LaToya Kelly installs keratin-fusion hair extensions on a client with alopecia, walking through the full process and why she initially hesitated. The client reports no fallen extensions or damage after a month, wearing the hair in a ponytail with a hat or as a swoop, and says problems only come from poor installation or removal.

Hey everyone, it's TT with a K-Tip for alopecia client. And when I originally posted this video to all my social media platforms, it immediately began to go viral and the comments were astronomical, like from positive to negative and everything in between. So I wanted to do a long-form video and show you all the follow-up video of her actual maintenance appointment and how things went from beginning to end. So I'll start with the beginning. We initially— I told her no to K-tips. I said her hair was fine. Um, I wasn't really familiar with doing K-tips on hair where the edges were gone because honestly, the edges— and I'm going to be blunt with everything I say— the edges is what we leave out to cover up the K-tips. So initially we did a sew-in, and after so long, I I met someone else who wanted to do the K-tips on their hair, but they were like, you know, I'm okay with wearing like a curtain bang and I'm okay with not pulling it up in a full ponytail. So when I got back to this client, I asked her if those were things that she had considered, if she would be okay with a curtain bang, which is a middle part that covers the sides, that doesn't show her sides. And if she wants to pull it up, she would either have to wear a headband, or not pull it up at all, or do the curtain, curtain bangs to where her hair kind of droops, and I'll show you what I mean in the video. So she really, really wanted the K-tips. She was okay with the limitations, which, um, I let her know what those limitations were as far as, um, the styling options, and she was okay with it. So I said, well, we're good to do the K-tips, um, and that's where this all began. So let's backtrack a little bit. For those who don't know what K-tips are, K-tips are originally called fusions, and it's where these little things in my hand are the actual K-tip. They're tipped with a keratin adhesive base, and they are infused to your hair with this hot tool, and this tool gets hot and melts it into your hair, which is where the infusion technique comes in. So now the technique has resurfaced. We have done invisible or traditional where you leave hair out around them to make it more flexible and versatile, or you don't leave hair out around them because you have super tight coily hair and you don't want to deal with a lot of maintenance of your natural hair. So K-tips have come back around and they've really resurfaced, um, to the African-American community because they've always been around, but we just weren't really wearing them. So now she has my kinky straight texture, and, um, I love this for her because it is extremely lightweight, um, and she doesn't have to worry about the tension on her hair. I can install a lot of hair and someone can look in the mirror like, wow, that just doesn't seem like so much hair is in my head.
K-tips can last a person anywhere from 3 months all the way up to 6 months or more. If you have finer hair or your hair is thinner, I don't recommend keeping them in longer than 3 to 4 months because they can either start to pull a little bit longer or quicker than they would on somebody with thicker, fuller hair. So I tend to tell my people with finer hair, just check in at the 3-month time and we'll see if they are still good to go or if they need to come out. And maintenance is dependent on the stylist. If my clients are out of town, which I do have people come to me from out of town, I have them check in with me after 2 months. And in my consultations, if someone is actually scheduling with me, I give them the lowest maintenance options. I give you at your consultation the tools you need to take care of your K-tips at home. So I use the tools on K-tips that make things the quickest and easiest for you to care for them on your own if you are doing it on your own, or if you're coming back to me, of course I take care of it. But I give my clients the option. I teach them what to use and how to use it if they want to do it themselves. Um, and That is how my installs go. Consultations are required for a service like this because not everyone can get these type of extensions. Some people's hair, again, is too thin. Some people's hair may be too short. We need to discuss colors, and K-tips can come in any color texture. I love for people to just get highlights if their natural hair is 1B or they're gray and they're putting color on it. I like for them to maintain their natural hair color. That's when they look the most natural. Um, so this is her look after I finished it, and she was extremely happy, and I was extremely happy. Like, it was so pretty. She looks so pretty. The lashes were on point. Her smile is beautiful. Her attitude, her personality, just her presence was just amazing. So I was so happy to be able to give her this. I didn't even realize her birthday was the next day until she told me, so So I was so happy that I could make this happen the day before her birthday for her. And I also did a maintenance on her hair. So she came back after a month and let me know how everything went. And I will show you guys that video too in a second, and you'll see, you know, how she wore it, how it held up for her. She has zero complaints, no K-tips fell out. Her hair looks beautiful, nice and full, and it looks natural for her. It doesn't look too heavy, like it's not her real hair, and it looks like this could be her natural hair. Like she just has some alopecia on the sides and she just has beautiful long hair. So that's the purpose of me when I do extensions and K-tips especially. She's able to wear her hair in a ponytail. I let her know that she would wear the curtain swoop like it is right there over her ear if she wanted to cover her sides. She could still wear her hair in a ponytail, and, um, yeah, she was good to go. I loved her hair, and when she came back for maintenance, I'll let you hear a little bit of what she said when she came back because I want her honest opinion, and I'll let you guys hear her honest thoughts.
So, so you was combing it? Yeah, on it, but I didn't comb up here. I was holding it. Yeah, you thought it was gonna come— they was gonna come out?
I did.
Yeah, I was scared at first, and then I just took that little brush, and then when I put up in the ponytail— of course I had my hat on, had my ponytail through my hat. I mean, and I— and then the days I didn't wear my hat, I just swooped. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? That way, that's the only way I could do it or whatever. But I told people, the only time this stuff is going to tear your hair up is if it's installed bad or if it's removed bad. I ain't had no problems with it, like. And then I did a little, you know, the— what you call them—
rods.
Flexi rods. Yeah, yeah, that's it. Hair looks good.
I do nothing like different.
Put your hand down. Auntie know what's all in my head. I'm like, oh my God, what did they say?
Let me see. Hurry up. Let me see. I should this shit.
Look, you know, they old school trying to figure out how it was done. So she do my heart. Look, look at my heart. Everybody taking it. I was like, oh my God. My mom said, wait till you get to the funeral. Mhm. I said, what? She said, you know, you don't want to know. I said, I gave— I don't have a card, nothing inside. I said, I gave them everything I had. I don't— I had one last card which I took a picture on my phone and I sent it to them. I'm like, that's all I got. I actually got more in my car now that I think about it. I got some hair stuff at home. Even when we was in the funeral home, the lady was like, girl, it's so hot, how do you keep your hair straight? I got Indian in my family. I said, yeah.
I said—
she was like, girl, it's so hot. I was like, yeah, it is. And then my mom was just— my mom was like, yeah, it's hot.
And then she was like, I told you I'm going to look just like y'all. I told you, yes. So she, since she was here at her maintenance appointment, I shampooed her hair and you see that she is completely natural. You see her natural texture and I just straightened her hair out, straightened her roots back out. And everyone asks like, why don't we see how this looks? You know, like how do you straighten it out? All of my clients, I educate on how to straighten out their hair at home if that's what they have to do. I show them how to blow dry their hair at home, how to straighten it out if they need to. And when I tell you, I use the simplest tools like that, make it so fast and easy that even a caveman can do it. Okay, but here I am just going to go through her entire head. And another thing, so people feel like, you know, the hair is natural, why, how does it not dread? Or stick together or twist up because my hair is natural. Sometimes the hair will twist, but that's why if you can't come back, I teach my clients, of course, how to take care of their hair or how to show someone else what to use to do it. But I go through each and every K-tip when I shampoo, blow dry, and straighten their hair. So that means that I look at every single K-tip. I straighten out the root of every single K-tip, the end of every single K-tip. And her natural hair, and I make it all look just like it did when she first came. So you'll see that throughout this process, that, that is exactly what I'm doing. I'm taking my time, I'm brushing through everything, and I'm making sure that each K-tip is perfect, not slipping, not pulling out any of her hair, because sometimes there's delicate spots. Some— somebody may have a delicate spot in the middle of their head, and I may need to remove those K-tips. So maintenance is its own unique thing. If you all are interested in like training and stuff like that, I do have an online virtual training that is self-paced. It's a monthly paid course, or I do have a one-on-one training so that you can schedule on my website or look that up on my website. I do have all of these tools that I am using within this video linked in the description, so so you don't have to worry about trying to figure out what I'm using on it. And another reason why I really love the kinky straight texture on my natural girlies is because literally she could have worn her hair blow dried, and I show my clients that they can wear their hair just blow dried if they want to. I've had a client come back for her, for her touch-up, and literally just have me blow dry it and put it into French braids and part it down the middle of her head. So, um, I really, really, really love K-tips. She could also do French braids. Um, I know how to braid to where it would fall over her ear. So yeah, K-tips are amazing. And wait a minute, you know, I've been out the game for a while, but look at that shirt, okay? Branding is everything, ladies. If you are a hairstylist, you have your own business, put you on you, okay? Wear you. Promote you, okay? Because nobody does it like you do, okay? Just a little side motivation because I love my little shirts. But anyway, this is her maintenance, you guys. This is after I have blow-dried and straightened her entire head. This is 1 month later. This is not the initial install, okay? This is a month later. Her K-tips look amazing, and they look even better the more they grow out. The even more invisible they become. Um, and it's all in the technique. It's really in the technique whether or not these things start to pull on your hair. I tell people if you remove them the wrong way or if they are installed the wrong way is the only time you will damage your hair. And I pride myself on making sure I educate my clients because if I don't educate you and you do something wrong to your hair, it's always my fault. So I make sure I give my clients a rundown from start to finish of what to use, what to do, what not to do, but not to use to make sure that you have the best experience and you love me and you keep coming back, right? Because who doesn't want repeat clients? So I know this video was very long, but for all of you who have stuck it through— is there a broom emoji? If there's a broom emoji, because there's one in the back corner of my video, drop a broom emoji in the, in the comments for me to let me know you made it to the end of this video. Tell me what you guys think. Tell me what I missed that I need to go over in the next video, because I know I said a lot of stuff, and it's been a long time since I did me a long-form video. Um, but I enjoyed this, you guys. Make sure you subscribe if you haven't already, and I'll see y'all in the next video.
