Can White People Wear a Sew In?

In this YouTube interview, hairstylist TT (owner of TT Does It All) talks with her client Heather about Heather’s journey from feeling insecure about her short, thin, curly hair to gaining confidence through a versatile sew‑in extension. Heather explains why she chose a sew‑in over tape‑ins or fusion methods, describing the installation, daily washing routine, weekly extension care, and how the extensions are colored and maintained. She highlights the durability of sew‑ins for an active lifestyle—early mornings, workouts, golf, and wind—emphasizing that the extensions stay in place with minimal maintenance. The conversation also covers the typical lifespan of a sew‑in (about 2‑3 months before re‑braiding, up to 7 months with careful reuse), cost‑effectiveness compared to other methods, and the importance of consistent service from TT and her assistant Capricia. TT uses the interview to promote her business, explaining how to book consultations (phone, website TTDoesItAll.com), her travel schedule between Kansas City and St. Louis, and the concept of a “versatile sew‑in” that can be styled in multiple partings, high ponytails, or worn down. The video ends with a call‑to‑action for viewers to like, share, and book appointments, and an invitation for other clients to be featured in future interviews.

Okay, so what made you decide to come to me to get your hair done?
Well, I was referred from a friend. She had been doing my hair for ages. Every time I would go in, I would be sad or upset. I have really short, curly, yucky hair. It was never thick. I put it in a ponytail and it would be a tiny little ponytail. There would be days I'd spend an hour, hour and 15 minutes on my hair twice a day. It was just never pretty, TT, and I always felt like I was trapped in this body with this horrific head of hair, and it made my self-confidence awful, awful.
So somebody told you about me and you were like, were you skeptical? Were you like, she can't do this?
I was totally skeptical. So whenever my friend said you should go see my friend Titi and have her sew some hair in. And I'm like, don't I wish! I wish that I could do that. She's like, no, really, you can. I had no idea that people who were white could have their hair sewn in and it would stay.
Right.
I mean, I don't have any kind of coarseness. You'd put a ponytail or a braid in my hair and a few days later it would be gone. I mean, it it's, you know, so slick and kind of silky and lifeless. I didn't know that when you braided the hair, you put hair in it. You do. So my hair stays in until Titi or Capricia take it out.
So how do you wash your hair? Like, do you still wash your hair every day? Like, how do you keep it— how long do you keep it up?
Like, that was a big adjustment at first. Okay. Um, so I was a serial hair washer. I would wash my hair twice a day. Um, you don't do that with this hair. So I have a sew-in, and so, you know, I— all this right here is my hair, and then my sew-in starts here. So all I do is, is I, I pull all of my, my fake hair extensions, I pull them up, I wrap them, um, with a, with a pony holder, put in a little tight bun, I cover it with plastic bag. It's very simple, it takes 2 seconds. And then I wash my real hair every day, so I still wash this because my hair oily because I have oily skin. But I wash my real hair and then I take this down and then I kind of, you know, do it all together. It's very simple. I wash my extensions once a week, so I wash my whole head on Sunday night. But it, it's really changed my whole life and my whole perspective. This hair is colored, and once it's colored once, as long as you don't overwash it and overprocess it, it'll stay colored. I do get it toned, about every 6 weeks or so. But if, if you're miserable about your hair, please know that even if you're white, you can come and get beautiful extensions and have exactly the length you want. You can have it cut. Nobody has ever, ever thought I have extensions in my hair, and I will never live without them.
So I have a question, a good question, I think. Why a sew-in over tape-ins or fusions or other things that usually a white person would choose those? Like, why sew-in?
So I had been told that you could do some of those other methods, but I also understand you have to take them out and put them in. Listen, I have a job. I get up every morning at 5 AM. I do what I do. After work, I work out. I play golf. I'm busy. I need this hair to stay I can't take it in and put it out. Also, for those who know me, I'm not awesome with hair and makeup. I'm not creative. I'm not very good at it. This is in, it stays in. I can do a ponytail. I can curl it. I can straighten it, and there's no slipping out. There's not a lot of room for error with, with what I have. So if you're busy and you really need something to stay in place and can withstand wind blowing and washing once a week and you need something durable, I think this is probably the most durable option of all the options.
Okay.
Hmm, what other question?
Um, how often, how often do you get yours done, or how often do you think somebody else should or would or has to?
Well, like I said, mine, I'm, I'm very fortunate. Um, the way that you and Capricia braid and the way you and Capricia do a great tight sew-in, I can tell at that 2-month mark it needs redone. My hair actually grows pretty fast, and I can move the entire sew-in come about 2 months. Now, nobody would ever know still at that point except for me that it's probably time to get it put back in. But you take out this exact same hair— I've kept my hair, and I buy all my hair from you, TT. Um, I can take this out, I can keep this hair and keep putting it back in for— gosh, I believe my first one I probably used for 7 months. You can get a long time out of your hair. From an economic perspective, this is very much more economical than some of the other options.
Yeah, because I could see that being thousands.
Oh, it's very expensive, and good luck too on finding somebody. I'm all about consistency and loyalty, and I like to know the person I'm going to. Um, TT also knows this about me. If I don't like something or something's not quite right, I I can tell them and they don't get upset, or— and I've never had any issues, but one time I had a small string that was sticking out and Capricia let me run over that night, and Capricia did something simple, whatever she did, you know, again, not a big deal, but it's not only about someone fixing it right then, but also just knowing that if you had an issue, you could pick up the phone. But with this, there's not a lot of room for error.
Right. There's no, no in-between maintenance needed.
No, none at all. No in-between maintenance.
So I'm gonna flip this around and I'm gonna show them what the sew-in is so they can see like what the heck we're talking about.
No problem.
Okay, so I'm going to show you guys what her sew-in consists of. So this is all her hair and you see the sew-in. So I literally just finished her sew-in and this is where it is. And I leave the perimeter of her hair out so you can see that it's— that's her sew-in up here that I'm holding. So all of that she puts in a ponytail and separates when she washes her hair every day, and then this is her extensions. The color is perfect. Ramona did a good job. Okay, so, oh, how about you put it up? Put it up in a ponytail, like just hold it up.
And I put in a ponytail, I mean, every single day. I work out, like I said, and I'm at the golf course, I'm in the wind, and you would never know, you know, that I, I've got the sew-in.
It's so pretty. You got one little piece in the back. Yep, there you go. Now lift it up. There you go. Oh, it's so pretty!
I love it, it makes me so happy.
I remember your first day. All right, all right, you guys. Hey, you all, I am TT, the girl who she's been talking about. If you did not know, long story short, she's like, my friends don't know, but people in our community just don't know that this is possible. Um, they think that fusions or the tape-ins or all that stuff is the only option out here. And you just need to promote yourself so that you can tap into every community, not just white, not just Black, Hispanic, or wherever else you want to go. Like, you should definitely promote yourself to all ethnicities because you're good, you know. So that is the drive behind this video. I honestly would love to interview all of my customers the same way I interviewed Heather today. It was, it was a great idea of hers, and I've always wanted to do it. I just, I'm so busy when I come to Kansas City or when I'm with my regular clients that I don't take the time to do videos like that. So she just kind of caught me on a day where she was my last person, and the sun still out and I had time to do it. So, um, I mean, things— God works in mysterious ways, I'll say that, because today obviously was meant to happen the way it happened. So, um, yeah, she wanted to make sure that I let you all know how to book an appointment with me. Um, I do things a lot on my website. I put a lot of time and thought into my website, so I really like to direct people to that website. Um, Heather has what I call a versatile sew-in. Um, a versatile sew-in is something that you can wear parted here, you can part it there, you can part it there, and you can also put it all the way up in a high ponytail, or you can wear it all down. So that is what I named my versatile sew-in. Um, I do consultation, so if you're like, I really still don't understand, um, Heather uses two bundles. I think she started out with shorter lengths, like like maybe a 12-inch bundle and a 14-inch bundle, and then now she's at like an 18-inch and a 16-inch because she likes a longer look. Um, also throughout getting used to wearing the extensions, she's gotten the color perfect. In the beginning, it was a little like, okay, well, the extensions aren't her hair, so of course you have to start dyeing them a different way. But as time went on, she just her and Ramona, who colors her hair, who introduced her to me, colors her hair to a T, like perfect. And the extension she colors as well to match perfectly. So, um, now that everything— I mean, like, she literally takes her hair out, puts her hair down, and cleans it in the exact way that I put it in so that when she comes back, we braid it the exact same way., and we put it in the exact same way. So it's literally just a routine over and over that we do her hair the exact same way. Um, side note, excuse my nails. I had surgery on my hand and I did not get a fill, so now I'm in the process of taking these nails off. Yeah, so that's what's going on here. But, um, you can book a consultation with me. I do phone consultations. Um, I met Heather in Kansas City. I travel back to Kansas City because it's home, and I can also service my regular clients here. And I live now in St. Louis, Missouri, so I come to Kansas City, Missouri, and work and visit family, and then I go back home and work and live. So, um, I am between St. Louis and Kansas City. I come to Kansas City— it was every other month, but once the craziness of my wedding and buying a house and the virus um, we definitely had to change my schedule. So, um, yeah, let me know if you guys have questions. Drop a comment if you're like, um, I'm confused about this, or that didn't make sense, or how do you do this. If you want to book a consultation, my website is TT Does It All. It's two Ts, TTDoesItAll.com. I'll also add a link to see like all of my different streams of social media. Yeah, I hope you guys enjoyed this video. I enjoyed making it. I thought that it was definitely a necessity, and it's a necessity for all of my clients because all of my clients have a different story of how they met me, their experience with their extensions. So I look forward to doing more videos, and if you are a client seeing this, boop, yes, you are next because I need your interview. All right, y'all, I'll see y'all in the next video. You guys, I hope you enjoyed this video. This video I'm showing you right now is something I recorded in 2013. This is a versatile sew-in, and this is showing the different things I was talking about with the parting, how you can part it left, right, or in the middle, and then you can also pull it up in a high ponytail, or you can wear it all down. So I used to call it the way sewing. So left part, middle part, right part, wear it all the way up, wear it all the way down, um, and I don't remember what the sixth one was. Don't judge me. But if you enjoyed this video, please thumbs up this video, double tap it, like it, share it with a friend. And I appreciate you guys for being on this journey with me, following along with me. And for those of you that are new to TT and TT Does It All's creativity, welcome to the crew, okay?
