Cut my Husband's hair #WithMe

LaToya Kelly cuts her husband's hair at home during COVID quarantine, despite having no experience with Black men's hair. She walks through clippers, lining, and blending while learning from viewers, referencing a failed attempt four years prior and the importance of steady hands and proper lighting.

Hey everyone, it's your girl TT Does It All, and this is going on week 2 of quarantine, so I had to cut my husband's hair. So join in with me as I do so. I needed help, y'all, because I don't cut men's hair. In hair school, I cut hair, but not African American hair, so I needed help. You can tell me what to do if you would like.
Do not cut my hair bald.
That should do. Just cut it even. Gotcha. Do I cut up or down? Up.
You going with the grain, not against it.
Okay, I'm going along first just to see how it So 4 years ago, my husband came to visit me in Kansas City and he needed a haircut. And I was like, oh, I'm fresh out of hair school, we cut hair before, I got clippers, I can cut your hair. And he never got to hear the end of it. His barber was like, who cut your hair? Because this mess is terrible. So he was very reluctant on letting me cut his hair, but I insisted. I bought new tools for this, and I was like, babe, you gonna have to bite the bullet and let me do it. I promise I will be careful this time and do it right. Plus, you don't really have a choice, period. All right, so I promise on your right it probably looks like a bald spot, but the ring light— I have two ring lights, and the one on the right is just shining on his head. So when he turns his head to the right, you'll see that it's not a bald spot at all, but it does look like it the way the light shining. Um, and I'm not perfect. Where's your brush? I'm not doing bad at all, babe. Here's my dirty mirror if you want to see. Not bad, right? You tell us shorter, right? Do something up here, and it needs to be lined too. I got liners. What do you think?
Cuz that—
this little swirl part's cut too, so it's not too long and crazy looking. Am I doing okay? Mhm. So what do you— do you want me to cut a little more right here or just line it?
This— when you say cut a little more, what do you mean?
Like, is it too long right here, do you think?
Too long, like where?
This little— or is it because it needs to be brushed out?
What you talking about?
This? This.
That's just line.
Okay.
Chopped off with the line in it. Yeah.
Okay. What about this? Do you want to cut shorter or just leave it?
Yeah, can be brought, brought down. Sure.
So this is a 1. So for that, do you want me to go to a half or stay at a 1? I think a half. What do you think? Think I'll try it. With this, we need a vacuum. Let's try one. Now y'all know good and well I don't know nothing about trimming no beard and lining up no head, but I did the best I could, honey. Do you not want me to do this part? Huh? You look very uncomfortable. Like you don't want to be here. He said, girl, just finish my hair. Cut this part. Listen, y'all, don't tell nobody, but I got my fingers crossed that he keep letting me cut his hair, cuz I can be better, y'all. For real, I can get better. Mustache. Uh-huh. I don't even know why I asked him did he want his mustache cut down. Like, that didn't even make sense, but I had to ask cuz I was nervous. Ready for the fun part? So listen, the line is where I really start feeling myself cuz you can see it coming together and I start getting real hype. I can't even lie, homies. I'm not bad, you know what I'm saying? I'm not hype. Then he brought me back down to reality and was like, nah, baby girl, you doing too much. Wait a minute. But I appreciate it because last time he let me do it like I knew what I was doing, and this time he helped me. I'm doing it, baby. I promise I'm not going back.
You want to do the front last. Get, get all this.
You should see it too. It look good.
No, get that last.
All right.
And you got to start from the middle, not from that edge on that too.
So do the— this part, you mean?
Yeah, on both sides. Do everything but the front, basically.
Aside from him helping me cut his hair, to be honest, I was just happy to be hands-on. Like, I'm used to doing hair all the time, so to not be able to was like, please just let me cut your hair. Okay, what you ready?
Ready for what?
To cut underneath. He act like we was on The Color Purple, like he did not want to put his head back. Mister, I am not cutting you, sir. You're in a safe place.
All right, so you cut that part. Did you— did you get— did you get—
no, not yet.
So before you—
I got down here.
Yeah, you got to get that part, that part, and do the front.
So how y'all think I'm doing? If y'all are proud of me like I'm proud of me, thumbs up this video, drop a comment, let me know what y'all are doing during this quarantine. Are y'all gonna have to cut somebody hair? Like, are y'all gonna have to get y'all hair cut? My sister got a short haircut, so she has to get her hair cut, but she's asking for a wig, so I don't know. I don't know how other men are gonna do it. Like, what if they women just cannot do it? What if you got like a shaky hand? That's not gonna work. What are we gonna do about this?
Listen, so it's not 100% symmetric, so I think this side goes up a little higher than this one. That's why I say you gotta— if you go from one end to the other, it's gonna be at a straight diagonal. So start from the middle and go to one side, then start from the middle and go to the other side. But you gotta have this part down on this side. Side too to see where you—
I did it. Okay, so do I make this side equivalent to this side?
You ain't got to make it, love. Just go from the— don't worry about evening the sides out, just go from the middle to the end.
I didn't even go up here cuz I feel like when you brush it down it's going to cover— it's going to come to that line.
No, it's not going to go nowhere. Um, you on the right path.
You want to cut down a little lower in the top? I'm saying like all over.
Mm-mm, no.
Can you see the camera back there?
Yeah, I ain't worried about the camera.
No, I'm saying so you can see what it looks like in the back.
I don't know, I'll take a look at back. You going to do it, you going to have to take off— you see all the stuff that's over there?
Oh, okay, okay.
You going to have to take that off and get me straight across here. But you can do it in phases, you ain't got to go all at once so you don't take too much. Go from the middle on out to the edge on each side.
It's a little better. Mhm.
Um, yeah, I don't know what magic he does on this side. Um, like I told you before, that side's up a little higher. Um, and yeah, you going to have to probably on each side, so cut it back.
So basically it looks like you even it out cuz this is shorter.
You don't have to come, and then you see this, you don't have to come up a little bit there. And why is this lower there? I don't know, I'll worry about it later. But yeah, you don't have to do so much on this side, on that one. But I got you. Like I said, this can come back just a little bit, just a little bit more.
Oh yeah, this needs to be at the corner more. So keep watching. So you mean like this piece, right? Cut that off. Yeah.
Turns, it usually lines up a little bit more with the other side. But yeah, that just a little bit.
That's it. Okay. I think that the all over just needs to be a little fixed. You get what I'm saying? I mean, because it's like, like you said, it's a little bit shorter and better over there, and it's a little bit thick right here. You know what I'm saying? Better?
Yeah, it's getting a little flusher. What do you think?
Look at you. I just think I need to go all over a little bit. It just looks very thick up here. Looks very thick.
Like I say, just do it in small, small waves. And I don't— like I said, just do a little. I don't know if it needs to be cut down so much.
No, I'm using the same, same, um, same length that I used all over, just kind of making it better. I think that one thing that barbers do, from my perspective, is they make it look so easy. Like, it looks like they're just combing, combing, combing with that clipper, but No, I could tell that they're taking their time. They're holding the person's head still and they're taking their time. And you kind of have to take your time at certain angles of the head. So I learned a little bit while I was doing this. So hopefully he lets me do it again. Look at it and you'll see what I meant. It looks— it's cut hair off. You see it, the difference? No, not quite. I think the thing is you got to go slower at certain angles so that it gets all the hair. You can't like rush and do it, cuz then it's like some pieces don't get cut. But you ain't got no— it's so good. Now you can see that on that right side, it's not a bald spot. He's not bald, I promise. It's the lighting. Okay, we'll go look at in the bathroom. What you think? One eternity later.
I appreciate you.
What else I need to do?
It's okay. This is a perfect struggle haircut.
Struggle?
It's not struggle haircut.
This is the best it's going to get right now.
Yeah, it's the best it's going to get.
You need to shave? No.
And that's what I'm saying, it's like I would rather you keep it right here than keep pushing stuff back and And then it don't grow back, cuz it's like—
oh wait, there's a piece I see. No, right, it's not the same. What? Here, just stand up.
It looks like—
all right, there you go. Is that it? Okay.
No, no, this—
did I cut you?
I don't know, maybe. It's okay, I get cut every time I get my hair Oh, it does look wavy.
Next time I'm going to practice the fade. I've done the fade in hair school, I remember it. You got to keep going back and forth at the line. You know how you paint when you say go like a V-shape? Mhm. That's how they blend that line in.
You did all right, Mom. Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you. I appreciate it.
Wonderful.
Now I can not be a savage beast. I can look halfway presentable. Feel the wind on the back of my head now.
You can feel the wind on the back of your head?
That was so thick before.
