How I’m Using AI to Work Smarter as a Hairstylist (You Can Too)

LaToya Kelly shows how she uses ChatGPT to write marketing copy, design thumbnails, draft client responses, and get parenting advice. She's bringing AI tools to the Black community and wants to prove they're useful beyond work emails.

Oh, you all probably don't know this, but I am really into artificial intelligence, like in so many levels, like music, videos, pictures, communications, technology, everything. Like, I'm like a nerd about it. And all of my customers, I really, really, really try to spread the word around the Black community because I feel like we are a community that is not really tapped into it as much as I would like. And I also think that that, um, a lot of us feel like our dreams are not attainable, which is totally untrue. So here is a video of a conversation that I had with my client who was like, yes, not for me, don't believe in it, or whatever. But I basically transformed her. By the end of this appointment, she was mind-blown. And I want to start teaching you all about artificial intelligence, how to use it into your daily routine, or just things that you want to do, just like I did for her today. I really— like, I'm so passionate about it. I want to be able to give that to you all. So watch this video, drop a comment, and let me know if you enjoyed the video. Um, and let me know if you're interested in more, because I have more, but I don't want to share if you all don't want it. I feel like y'all need this. So I'll see y'all later. Uh, I just want to— okay, so you don't use artificial intelligence and you said it annoys you?
Only because I'm old school and I prefer just the one-on-one conversation direct to the person. That way there's no misunderstanding, and I'm big on communication. So when I'm talking to an AI or robot, i.e., then it gives me a certain type of feeling. So that's the only reason why. But as far as with you, like I said, it benefits you, it saves you time, it does communicate in a But again, I'm just old school and stuff.
Hey, well, tell me about a conflict that you tried to avoid that you was just like, God dang it, I cannot— I gotta— I can't avoid this. Uh, work related? Not even work. It don't have to be work. It could be like, my nephew did this to my dog and now I gotta address my brother, you know. I mean, it could be anything. It don't have to be work related because That's another misconception. A lot of people feel like artificial intelligence is just for work emails and client summaries. Like, it can be for personal too. Like, it ain't just—
so how so personal?
You can— so for example, I have a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old June 5th and 6th. I don't know nothing about 4-year-olds and 1-year-olds outside of my own dealing with these, you know, like, I mean, I haven't— I've never had to live with babies, you know. So I'm, I'm the youngest, so I don't have younger siblings that I had to do stuff with. So let's just say it's a Saturday morning and I'm like, these kids clearly are bored. My son needs something to do. I can literally ask AI. Let's see. So my 4-year-old son is extremely bored right now. It's raining outside, so we can't go outside. And I am 9 months pregnant, so I'm not really able to do a lot of activity. Can you give me something that I can do with my son to entertain him? And yeah, all right. So obviously I'm not pregnant, but in this, he would love this. So this is literally giving me a spiel. It's literally like writing out stuff. Okay, it's a little— it— I mean, it's still writing. I knew it.
So I'm gonna let it tell me of things just to do like at home, which is things to do around the city, all the above.
Low energy indoor activity. 5 to 10 small toys or objects around the room, under pillows, behind cushions, etc., and give him verbal clues like Something is hiding where you lay your head at night. Let him run around and discover them like a mini adventure.
2.
Window art with washable markers. What you do: give him washable markers or window crayons and let him draw all over the windows. They wipe off with a wet rag. Ask him to draw animals, monsters, or tell a story through pictures. Tip: ask him to draw the rain or a rainbow to to match the weather.
Okay.
3. Storytime puppet show with socks. What you do: I would have thought that. Clean socks, draw silly faces on them with markers, and make them talk in funny voices. You sit back and do voices while he acts out with them, or vice versa. Bonus: Let him put on a show for the baby in your belly.
4.
Floor puzzle storytime twist. What you do: Grab a floor puzzle or make a puzzle from magazine cutouts or flashcards. As he puts each piece down, make up a silly story based on it.
You get these— those are all pretty good though.
What you do, let him help you build a mini snack station. Sit at the table together and let him portion little bites. Grapes, crackers, cut.
Okay, I'm gonna stop it because you can— yeah, so when people say they don't use AI, I mean, I get what you're saying. It's like, I don't I don't need it when I'm trying to call and get my rental car. I don't want to talk to AI. That's your version of AI, right? But you know, AI is in Netflix, like it's in— sorry, it's in a lot of stuff that you already use. It just makes it simpler and faster for you, and it brainstorms when you like, I'm drawing a blank, like I don't have it.
So it's—
I mean, I, I— it's almost like the Black community It's either your generation where it's like, I just, I don't want to talk to a robot, or it's the younger generation that's like, they just don't see the how it can help them, right? But it, I mean, literally everything. I, I will say my mom sent me a text message and it really bothered me when she said, and I don't want to trigger her by responding back with my negativity, so help me respond to her in a positive tone that gives her some type of affirmation. But also doesn't undermine how I feel and what I'm about to say. And it will literally give me a response. Yes, this is how I feel, this is how I feel, you know. So it's like, right, I even like Google reviews, like if— or, or you— my Facebook, people leave negative comments all the time. They may be like, girl, look at her eyebrows, or look at her fingernails, who wears fingernails that color, you know. Like they just always have something to say.
And it—
or they may have a question where it annoys me because I deal with it every day, but it's really not an annoying question, but I don't know how to answer it anymore. Like, it's almost like my mind has gone through this so much, it's hard for me to go back to the beginning and give them a basic answer because they don't know what K-tips are. So I got to go back to the beginning and not just say, oh, you need to do this. Like, no, I have to tell this person what a K-tip is. Like, so if I ChatGPT is unbiased. Like, AI, the computer, is unbiased. If you tell us I want an unbiased answer, you don't know anything about me. Now here's another thing. So I say all this to say, it will eventually start to help you the more it learns you. And I have had clients in my chair literally crying after I have told them, like, so ask ChatGPT this about you. And they put it in and she was like boohooing because it really will tell. So the more you— so let's just say I used it for my mom, so it knows my relationship with my mom, it knows my relationship with my kids, it knows that I'm pregnant now, it knows that I want to be able to entertain my child, like it knows that my supervisor emailed me this and I wanted to respond this, so it knows that I'm going through whatever at work, you know. So it begins to learn you and it learns how you wanted to respond. So now it knows your weaknesses, it knows your strengths, and it knows how to help you with those if you ask it to help you. Okay, you get what I'm saying? So even if you like, at work, I do not like dealing with clients that are quiet. The quiet clients, they just irritate me. I feel like they hiding something. Like, how can I get through this? Literally, ChatGPT will tell you try these steps, think of it in a client's perspective, maybe the client went through this, or, you know, like it'll just give you what you ask it for.
So does that not—
and again, that's—
that could be wonderful, but I don't know if I want a computer to know me that well.
A computer already knows you that well. AI is in your prescriptions, it's in your— it's in your home, in your smartphone.
It is. It already knows when I Google something and all of a sudden it shows up on there, uh, on my Facebook.
That's artificial intelligence.
And so I get it, you cannot hide from it.
So there are personal things that you don't want to put into it. You don't want to put your Social Security number in there ever, you know. You don't want to put things that are extremely private, like if you going through a miscarriage. And I don't want a— you know, I mean, ChatGPT ain't gonna tell everybody, hey, TT had a miscarriage, you know. I'm just saying, you know. But You, you— there are some things if you want to keep private, you keep private, but it is not, um.
So how long have you been using it? How has it helped you with your day-to-day and business adventures?
I love the question though. I like the question. So I literally use it every single day of my life, like every day. Um, I use it for branding ideas. I use it for my descriptions for my videos. Like, I'll say like, hey, this video is, um, showing my client who had matted hair, and I am showing people how to detangle hair. Create a description for me. It'll create a description for me. I'll say give me hashtags, it'll give me hashtags. I'll say give me a thumbnail. A thumbnail is like these images you see over YouTube videos that make you want to click it. I'll tell it to give me a thumbnail design, it'll give me a thumbnail design. I'll say I want, uh, I use it like all day. Even if you had texted me and said, hey, um, I need to reschedule my appointment, um, I'm looking for an appointment on the 10th and that's all I can do, and I may say ChatGPT, like, help me with a response to her because I don't have nothing on the 10th. Like, this is her third reschedule. I'm not rescheduling her again, or she needs to pay me a new deposit. Like, this is how I feel, but how do I say this to my client professionally to where they don't feel like I'm insensitive to whatever their situation may be? Exactly. But changing— if you don't— hey, I don't. So it'll give me a response that's like, thank you, thank you, because I was mad.
It takes the stress off of you.
It does.
Or that, that Not the ownership, because it's still you responding.
It is, and I have to live by what it says, um, especially if I'm gonna send it to a client. But like you said, it does— it, it takes my emotion out of stuff too.
Yeah.
Um, I mean, I use it, uh, I'm— first of all, I've written 7 books. Sorry, 7 books. Um, one of them is about AI and relationships. So I use it even in my marriage. Like, I felt like, um, there was a situation where I felt like this is how he responded in this stressful situation to me, and help me understand why, why he feels this way, you know. Not help me to explain to him how I feel, help me explain why he feels that way, you know, because I mean, I'm— I love him to death, and it's like, he's not a mean, bad person or nothing. It wasn't mean what he said. It was just like, I need you to understand that I need this from you. And I'm like, well, I need this from you. So I'm like, well, help me understand where he coming from if he ain't understanding where I'm coming from. Yeah. And it told me, it said, you know, maybe his thing is the way you said it wasn't respectful to him. And I'm like, you know, I mean, it just gave it to me in a perspective I wouldn't have thought about it.
Um, so it's like a therapist at the same time.
People do literally use the one— the client that was crying, she's going through a divorce and all this stuff. Like, she literally does use it sometimes as some support, you know, with things that she's going through. Even she said even with responding with him through the divorce and stuff, it was something he said and she wanted to respond this way, but she asked it for help and it helped her. And she was like, he was blowing her phone up. Because he could not believe the response. Yeah.
And, uh, the wording. And sometimes, you know, that old school saying, it's not about what you say, it's how you say it.
And that was the thing with my husband. It wasn't what I said, it was how I said it to him that made him like, you need to stop saying that to me. Look, you know what I'm— why? Like, it's a stressful situation. I just need to help. I'm just asking you for help. No, no, you're not asking me, you telling me. And I'm telling me So, um, I think that, I think that it could help us. So there are things that people want to do, like projects that people want to take on. Like, hey, I want to put myself to be the new division manager of nurses, you know? And it's like, what steps can I take to get me there? I've done this, this is my degree, this is my whatever, this is my strengths and weaknesses. How can I get to be the division manager? It will literally give you a breakdown of steps. You need to have this under your belt. This is what you need to think about. Are you doing this? Have you taken this? You know, like, it, it's literally more than just it— I don't want it to know, you know, like, it can help. I feel like with us, it can help us so much with stuff that we may just be struggling with and we just lay on the table because we think that we're not capable, we're not worthy sometimes. It's like, no, we can do— we got more power than we think. We just don't know how to execute sometimes. So it can even help you execute stuff. Like, it's just so much stuff. Like, I'll ask you for wording. I want to create a flyer for K-Tips. Give me— what should I put? Well, make sure you put this in bold. These colors are really attract women. My demographic is 35 to 45 and up women, you know, African-American women. What are some things that I can put out to advertisers to make them want to use my videos. It'll give me a list of stuff. Like, it literally—
so I see what you're saying now. I didn't know that it did all that in depth. Um, I've been nursing, RN, for 25 years, and that's first passion. Second passion is, uh, want to do my own interior decorating business, and I'm great at it, so I'm listening to you and I'm really learning something because, um, one of the things is trying to figure out, you know, which, which way to go. I understand, you know, it's always getting that license behind your name, but it's for a certification so people can take you seriously about what you do. But at the same time, um, just how to advertise your business and get your name out there. Then, uh, and even with communication or with my daughter, she's you know, the younger generation. And so she's definitely all over the place. She has a bachelor's degree, but Mama won't do this and Mama won't do that as far as her own businesses and getting it started. So listening to you, maybe there's some— a direction that would definitely, uh, just kind of help take the stress and the wonders out of the situation. And you know, you do try to talk to people sometimes, but sometimes you can't tell people what you're doing, so um, because they're not always in favor of your success. Yeah. And so, as in, what I'm here for you, AI is just a non-biased, straightforward, okay, this is what you do. So, okay, well, I'm listening.
Different. So you said graphic design, interior decorating. So I literally have used ChatGPT to help me start redecorating this room. I took a picture of my room and told it I wanted to look more of this direction, and it literally sent me a picture back of this room transformed. So people use it even for that. Like, I could say the pink isn't working for me anymore, what's a modern color for women in my demographic that it already knows? Because so I don't have to keep repeating myself to it, it knows my demographic at this point. Um, what, what colors are in right now? What's trending? You know, like, even with you, you could say, okay, I'm, I'm now doing my interior design. Um, I have a client with the whatever room, and she wants to go chic boho. I don't even know what the heck any of this means. I don't know what this means.
But right, right, sound good.
Yeah. Uh, you like, girl, no, we're not doing chic But, um, how do I do— uh, not how do I do this because you know how, but more or less what's really trending going into 2026, you know? Because you, you don't want her to just be in the past. You like, right, how do I give her some suggestions for this to be a timeless transition for her, her piece, you know? Like, you can even go deeper and say this is get— you can even give it a picture, say, here's the proposal that I sent this person and here's what I recommended to her. How can I kick this up a notch? It'll say, oh, well, you had good ideas with this, and I love the way you said, uh, um, a zero gravity chair, but what about this? Like, and then it'll start throwing you other stuff, and I'm like, yes, yes, I love it. So I get so excited when I talk about artificial intelligence.
Addictive though, that you use— do you use it every day?
Um, I don't use it every day for my husband. I don't use it every day for work. Sometimes I may be like, hey, I want to do a new idea. Um, with— I got a new idea, like, how do I— what— how do I do this? So it's not something that it's like I can't even do hair because I'm on my phone using ChatGPT based off this conversation. No, it's like Some things you don't, you don't need it for. Like, some things you like, no, I feel this way and this is my response, you know? Like, right? No, I don't think it's something that's a— now, I think that there— I know that there are people who have used certain aspects of AI negatively. So for example, Game of Thrones. Did you watch Game of Thrones? So Game of Thrones was a TV show that was on. It was amazing. Dragons and mythical creatures and everything was amazing. But there was an AI where you could speak to it as if you were talking to someone from Game of Thrones. Okay, so instead of it being ChatGPT, it was Agatha. We'll say Agatha, whatever. Um, so, so it was talking to Agatha, and Agatha told it to do something, and it did it, and it was detrimental. So There are instances that have been reported, but I mean, learning from those things, it changes things. So, um, there have been instances where some— a child that's vulnerable has made bad decisions based off of an output from ChatGPT. But there are also things that it can't say. Like, um, I had a client say that she was starting a toy line an adult toy line, and she needed help with like how to advertise it, what to say, you know. And she said, girl, the stuff that it spit out to me, it was just amazing, you know.
Like, so it's not, um, I mean, so have you yourself experienced any negative responses, or has it all been—
it's, it's what you make of it, you know. Like, I could— of course it's giving me stuff where I'm like, stop saying that. Like, it'll say something like sis. And I'm like, stop saying that. Like, I get that that's the tone that I'm trying to get to, but I don't want my YouTube videos to start with this, you know? Like, so, and then I have to tell it, like, I wanted to be down to earth, and but I also always want to remain humble. Like, I never want people to be like, she thinks she everything, you know? Like, I never— so I have to tell it, do not— no, you know? Like, you'll tell it, no, don't ever say that. Like, that would never come from me. Um, you know, so I— you, you do have to give it you because it will— it's, it's generic. Sorry, it's generic. So you do want to give it your tone even when it responds to people. No, I would never tell my sister boohoo or something, you know, like it's just certain stuff where it's like, that was playful and I told you to be playful, but that was too playful, you know, like, so you You literally have to read everything it gives you. You never want to just copy and paste stuff out of ChatGPT. You always want to read over it, make it your own.
So is this an app that you download?
ChatGPT is an app. Um, there are different models of ChatGPT, but ChatGPT is my favorite. I mean, there are different models for AI, but I like ChatGPT. It's just the easiest, the fastest. To use. Um, yep, it's literally called ChatGPT. Okay. Um, okay, so would you use it? I, I would, yes.
Um, I, I do believe that although I'm, you know, have old school ways, but in order to keep up with everything, that you have to be open-minded, and I'm always open-minded to learning. Have to be. I'm a nurse. There's always new things medically. So, um, absolutely, in the way you kind of described it and broke it down, I could see where it would benefit. Um, still have my own decisions and choices, but definitely always open-minded to use it to level up where you can.
I want it over. So I want you all to drop a comment. Let me know what you thought. Let me know if you like, okay, that was too much, that wasn't enough, I need more, whatever it is, because Again, this is a topic that I really, really love, and I want to share it with you all. If you all think there is some information you would want, let me know. Oh, and some of the things in that video were hypothetical, okay? Obviously— well, not obvious to you, but I'm not 9 months pregnant. Um, the situations of the text messages and stuff, I'm using hypothetical situations. They did not happen. Um, but there are instances where things have happened that I have shared with ChatGPT to get advice from. There is a temporary chat, kind of like using your privacy browser on your computer on your computer or your phone where you can have a conversation with it in private and it will disappear. Now, you still don't want to put your Social Security number and all that stuff in there because does it really disappear? Who knows? But it won't follow up in the rest of your conversations. Whereas if I told it my demographics today in a public chat— not public, but in an open chat— then tomorrow it will remember versus the temporary chat will be temporary. So I have tutorials where I show you all how to use ChatGPT and everything, but you all just have to let me know that that's something you want, and I will share it with you.
Okay.
