How Long Do Lace Frontals Stay LAID?

LaToya Kelly documents a week wearing a lace frontal while recovering from illness and postpartum hair loss. She shows how to secure it with an elastic band and scarf, clean adhesive buildup with 91% rubbing alcohol and Black African soap, and remove it safely. She's honest about the pain-versus-beauty trade-off and the daily maintenance required.

So let me tell y'all how I have neglected myself for like a long time. So, um, I got my hair done one time since like before I've been pregnant, and I got it done in I think October for like a photo shoot for my social media and stuff. I literally came home and took the makeup and the wig off. So today is like the first day I have had my hair done and my lashes done and my brows done, and I actually look like Titi. I'm so excited to be back. I'm feeling a little bit better. I've been sick for like over a month. That's a whole another story. But I got tested, it was not COVID. It's been hay fever, allergies, sinus infections. And, um, I hit like rock bottom with being sick Sunday. I went to urgent care like 5 minutes before they closed. It just so happened to be that time, and I just was miserable and sick and tired of feeling crazy. So I went to urgent care, and they looked at me and did not open the door, and I like Yeah, it just set me over the edge. So Monday I went back to urgent care. I finally got some antibiotics and some steroid, um, I forgot what it's called, prednisone. So like literally I'm still congested, but I'm feeling like almost like something's happening today because this was yesterday that I actually got the medicine. So I went and got my nails done, I went and got my feet done, I went and got my lashes done, I went and got my brows done, I went and got my hair done. I said, listen, listen, boo-boo. Okay, and the last thing is everybody today kept asking me, oh, where are you going? You look so pretty. Where you going? Where you going? Home to my husband. I don't have nothing planned. No, I'm not going to Kansas City. No, I'm not going to no party. No, I'm not going to the club. No, I'm not going out to eat. I went to the post office, the grocery store, and home. This needs to be the norm for people. Sometimes you just need to get it together for you, for your man, and that's it. It ain't got to be no event. I'm TT though. All right guys, so one really important thing to remember, they did give us an elastic band in our box. So I'm going to use that to tie my hair down, um, and I will let you all know how I tie my hair down. It is different from everybody else, I'm sure, but I don't use bonnets. I don't like bonnets. Um, I use a scarf, and I'm gonna use this too. So the way I would do it And I'm going to open it up, I'm going to stretch it, and I'm going to make sure where the line of my lace meets my head is held down tight. Then I'm going to go over my ear so that my sideburns stay flat as well. I'm tying it underneath. You definitely want to make sure it's not too tight to where it affects your sleep. Um, so that's how I'm tying my hair down. First step. Second step, I have a bandana. I slept in scarves and bandanas since I was a child, and I still live by it. So I am wrapping it up into, or folding it up into, just a strip. Then I'm going to put that on top of that. And one thing about me is I do not like to sleep pretty, but I'm going to have to do it. So you may be asking yourself, okay, so what about the rest? I don't do anything with it. So when I go to sleep, I sleep on my side and I lay my hair up on the pillow some other way and I go to sleep. Boom. Okay, I'll see y'all when I wake up cuz this might be on my nose when I wake up. I'm going to be going through a week with a lace frontal, and I'm going to do it with multiple installs so you can see what things you will go through when you wear a lace frontal, how I sleep with them, how I tie them down, um, how they start looking, what starts happening with them. So I hope you guys enjoy this. This is the first frontal wig, and, and I do have the video in the description of the install and where this wig came from and everything. But, um, I kept this hair tied down for like 2 days, and it looked like it was about to cut my circulation off, as you see right there. But I kept my hair tied down because I have a— well, I had a cold, and I had just been in the house. So this is day 2 after getting it done, and I just finally took the scarf off and wanted to just kind of brush through it and, um, flat iron it, kind of bring it back to life. Um, so again, this is day 2, and I didn't have any issues with it. Um, the baby hairs were still pretty laid in, in place. The part was still crispy. The edges, everything was still laid down. So Day 2, there was no issue from what I saw. The only thing I know I did need to do was straighten it out, because another thing, if you guys get something long like this one, you're going to have to keep it straight. And if you want to keep it out your face— like, I wasn't feeling well, so I just kept it in a ponytail. So of course now you have those dents in your hair that you have to flat iron through. So I am just going to flat iron out those little dents, and then I'm going to come back the next day and actually show you what I started to experience with this frontal. So this video is about to go through 3 wigs, and I'm going to show you what I've experienced with all 3 of them. Because this first wig, I was like, okay, I'm gonna try not to mess with it, I'm gonna try to just leave it alone. And because I'm a hairstylist, I know what to do but I didn't want to do that because if you are the average person just going to get their hair done, you don't know how to lay baby hairs. We don't know how to lay the lace, or we don't know how to— if there's glue showing, how to get that off. So I'm gonna go over all of it for you. So sit back, grab some tea, a drink, whatever, and, um, enjoy the video. And go ahead, if you are not subscribed, go ahead and click that subscribe button right now. Button, button right now. And thumbs up this video because it's about to be packed with information on everything you've asking about what it's like to wear a frontal. And y'all, it's, it's work. I'm just gonna say it's work. I'm not even gonna lie to you, it's not for the weak-hearted, okay? I just took the black scarf off. Yes, I'm on the toilet, y'all. Okay, I'm not even going to sugarcoat it today. I did put a thicker, wider elastic band. This was 2 inches, the other one was 1. I kept it over my ears last night, in my ear It's killing me up here. Okay, but let's see how good it worked. I feel like the thicker one is not going to leave me as horrible of a mark as the one did yesterday. It went away after like an hour, but— oh, my ears still like This line is not like it was yesterday. And for those who don't know how to fix their baby hairs, today might be the day where you like, uh, this ain't exactly the same as it was when I left. So day 3 might be the day where you like, dang, How the hell I'mma put these back to where they was? And I'mma try to show y'all, okay? As long as that lace is still laid, you could do anything through Christ which strengthens you. Amen. All right, I'll see y'all at the shop, okay? So I want you guys to see what my hair looks like. It's 4 days later and, uh, Yeah, so as you see, it still looks pretty good. And one thing that I do notice is the adhesive right here is kind of bunching up. That's easy to fix. I am taking some 91% rubbing alcohol and I am going to spray it onto a little corner because I don't want to lift my entire lace up, okay? So I'm just going to spray, it's just the corner, and then Y'all see it? Y'all see that little roll right here? Oh yeah. Okay, let me see. Okay, yeah, cuz That's a little bit of the adhesive. And that's— yeah, so I want to get that off because number one, it's impossible to thoroughly clean up to the lace when you're like showering or washing your face because you really want your baby hairs to stay in place. So if y'all experience, you know, a little bit of that rolled up adhesive, then boom, that's how you get it. So, and I feel a little sticky right there. You see how much I've gotten off? All right, boom. Okay, so This mousse gets rock hard, right? Let me just— okay, so this mousse gets like really, really hard. That's why I got to be— come on up. There we go. So, and it gets really hard, so I'm going to take a little bit with this because As you see, my little hairs, they— I could leave this. I mean, I don't necessarily have to do nothing to it because it's not terrible, so I'm gonna leave it because this video is how to take care of your frontal. And if you really don't have to do nothing to it yet, I wouldn't recommend it. And right now my hairs are still okay to where I don't have to do anything with it. I'm being extra, so I'mma leave this. Look, I might comb— should I comb a little bit? Let me leave it. Let me stop bothering stuff. Let me stop, okay? Cuz it still look Okay, so that adhesive is off. This up here, I'm still looking good, still looking good. Let me stop bothering stuff like I said. Okay, I'm about to use a little straightener, but who cares? I look normal. So, all right, this is day 4. I got it done Tuesday. Today is Saturday and I did not have to do anything but remove a little bit of adhesive, so I'm doing good. And she did a good job on my hair, didn't she? So I'm supposed to be leaving this alone. I'mma leave it alone for real, y'all. Okay, how I look? I'll be back cuz I'm taking it down and getting it redone Tuesday. I know it only be a week, so I can only give y'all a week of maintenance. After that week, it's time to scratch. Well, you guys, today is it for this hair. I'm taking it down today. Um, a little caked up glue still happening, but whatever. Um, still looks really good up here. More caked up glue right here. But I don't even think that's glue. Shoot, I think the lace just might be a little— I can't tell. Y'all tell. Can you tell what it is? I can't either. But my husband was like, why you taking your hair down? I think he like it. Oh, I think he like me. Oh no, for real, I think he— I think I think she looking like it, so I'm gonna have to keep this one in the back. See ya. All right, y'all, so I'll show you how I take it down. Okay. All right, I'll see you in a second. By the way, it is day 6, so today I got it done Tuesday, and it is— what's today? Tuesday? I mean, today Monday. So that's how long it's been up. Oh my God, girl, yeah, I can't do this. And then this, I just, um, I could— I could have tried to fix it, but— and so look, I was I'm about to make a run with my husband, but what I was gonna do is take this up under and go. I'm gonna do it. I might do it. I would recommend this for y'all because it depends on where your hairline stops. I know my hairline is like right here, um, up here. My hairline is like right here. I can feel where my hairline is. It's like right here, so I know that the adhesive is not on my hair, so I know I could just peel it off. But you can either stand like under the water in your shower and just let the hot water just run through it and then use this to kind of pick it up, or you can use the 91% rubbing alcohol. It really just depends on what you got at your disposal. Sometimes, like right now, that 91% alcohol is kind of hard to find, so Well, during COVID it was. It's still COVID, but I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to do it. I'm not going to do it because I got a run to make. Don't do it, girlfriend. So what is that? I think that's adhesive. Yeah, that's adhesive. See? So yeah, new wig, new day tomorrow., but I will be back to show y'all what it looked like, how I take it off. All right, you guys, so I'm in the shower and I'm about to wash this off. Okay, so as you see, it's getting a little cakey here. Y'all already seen all this, so what I'm going to do is— oh yeah, and I did say something earlier I want to clear up. You will need some alcohol at some point, um, and that's when you try to clean this off. So don't think that you will not need alcohol at any point, because you will. I don't even really need this wire. But the heat, the steam and the heat is just loosening up that adhesive for me. So at this point, I'm done with the comb. So right here, I am just using my fingers to, um, kind of comb, massage through it. And I'm going to use my rat tail carbon comb. And, um, to get off as much as I can, I'm going to use my Black African soap, and I'm going to massage it into my hairline and comb it through. Um, and as you see, everything is still intact on here. I haven't cleaned off the wig yet, really just getting it off of my head and getting my hairline clean. Um, whatever I don't get off in the shower, I will actually use the 91% rubbing alcohol once I'm done cleaning my hair, and I'll do that kind of over the sink, like over the faucet, and get the remaining residue out. Now if you got full edges, I don't know how you're gonna get— well, you— I do know how. You ain't gonna get it off with, um, with how I did it. So I put my baby hair cream in there, which, um, to remove the baby hair cream, it comes with instructions, but you need hot water. So I got my little black African soap. I use this for everything. So all this is adhesive. Oh, my hair itch so bad, y'all. So I'm gonna come back and show y'all my scalp because I'm sure right now it looks like, oh my God, her edges came out. Um, I did cut my locs off because I was experiencing the postpartum hair loss. Trust me, this did not break my edges off. This is all forehead. So I'm going to show y'all what it looks like after it's no longer pink, and then I got another YouTube review tomorrow, so Y'all let me know what y'all think about this. I like vlogging, it's kind of fun. My hair's burning now. Okay. And this is as far up as my hairline goes up here. And as you see, the hairs are still there. It looks like glue. So you can see my color starting to come back. It was a little red. All right, I'll be back out the shower. Okay, I don't like that I can't clean my ear for real. Like, um, I could wash my forehead, but y'all see the color is back. Like, my skin is not too toned, it's normal. Um, this part was already thin over here, so none of my hair is missing. It's all fine. So, um, But I just don't like the fact that I cannot wash my face. Like, none of this could get washed. Like, my lace was stopping like right here, so that means all of this was covered in lace. I could not wash that. Um, where the baby hairs was, I couldn't really wash that. Where this baby hairs was, I couldn't really wash that either. So, um, I don't know. I'm not— I don't like that, number one. My head feels a little tender right here. I don't know if— oh, it looked like something wrong right there. See, and I don't blame her. Let's start right there. I do not blame her. Um, this is just lace. This is the beauty is pain that people talk about that I just don't believe in. Like That could be because I took it down too soon. Um, that could be because I didn't use 91% rubbing alcohol. That could be numerous things. So, um, don't be so quick to blame your stylist, y'all, coming from one. All right, y'all, so tomorrow, I don't know, I might just switch it up and not do the frontal and do the closure wig I have instead. I don't know, I'm just going to take both and we'll see what she says. Okay y'all, so I'm back, hair is back in, I am flourishing. If you want to get details about this wig, the video is in the description. I feel so fresh. Don't look at my kitchen, y'all. A mess. Random side note, if y'all want to see me like vlog about my days or what or whatever, cuz this video was kind of fun to do. So yeah, let me know. Make sure y'all thumbs up this video, okay? Okay, here I come. Hey y'all, so this is actually day 3 with my hair up and it's still looking nice. Okay, uh, but if you guys would like to see your wigs or your hair extensions featured in my next video, go ahead and email me at the email address below, and I will see y'all in the next video. All right, so the one thing I just did was I cut this off. It was bothering me. It was like right above my ear. But this lace is so— and look, damn, but this lace is like so thin, like So I just took my wig off and I want y'all to see what my skin is doing where that lace was. First of all, I really got a 5-head if the lace was all the way up here. My hairline starts back there. This is why I love frontals. But, uh, yeah, I just— it's time for me to wash my face. So I'm keeping it off for a week because I really just want to be able to wash my face. And it's not that it's bad, like my skin doesn't look terrible, but I know it could be better. So I'm going a week without a frontal and then I'm going to Cancun with a frontal. See all this dryness? Like, that's what was up under the lace that I could not even get to. That's gross. Look at that. That is gross. Okay, yeah, it's time for me to get my hair some TLC my skin, some TLC. So this is what happened when I went to another stylist. Literally the day I left, this is what it looked like. So I was just like Yeah, I did a lot of doctoring this up. It was not giving what I needed it to give, but it did get me through my son's first birthday party, which was the whole purpose. So the person who has been doing my hair in these videos, I booked this install for my son's first birthday party before I booked her installs. So this one I had booked like a couple months out. And I wanted to keep the appointment because I didn't want to just be canceling. So I wish I had canceled because, yeah, the way my hair was looking after leaving, and then I haven't— having to use my own baby hair cream to kind of lay the lace a little bit, it just wasn't giving what I was used to. Um, and clearly I'm still sick. Um, trying to get it all together, but it got me through my son's first birthday party. But no, it just wasn't doing what it needed to do. But I want to definitely do a video where I'm answering more of the questions you all have from wearing lace, because as you see, even with me having to fix this stuff, who knows how to do that if you don't know how to do hair? So drop a comment and let me know. Let's just say I can't keep my hair done for more than a week. But I definitely kept it tied down. But anyway, drop a comment and let me know what questions you have for the next updated video.
