How to: Natural Lace Frontal Hairline by @ttdoesitall

In this instructional video, LaToya Kelly (TT Does It All) demonstrates her updated workflow for customizing and installing lace frontals using her own Brazilian deep‑wave hair. She explains why she no longer bleaches knots or tints lace—both practices reduce frontal longevity and are time‑consuming. Instead, she matches scalp color with a makeup/contour palette applied to the lace and hairline. Kelly shows how to pluck and tweeze the frontal directly on the client’s head to achieve a natural hairline, and she describes her preference for short, natural‑looking baby hairs rather than long S‑curl styles. The video details the full installation process: a 13×5‑inch frontal, three bundles, and an average two‑hour completion time, including cutting baby hairs and straightening the hair. She references her own product line (hairinkkansascity.com) and promises a follow‑up video on securing the frontal without tape or glue. Throughout, she emphasizes the importance of precision, client‑specific color matching, and charging appropriately for the labor involved.

Hey everyone, it's your girl TT Does It All, and I'm back with a customization video for frontals. And I've been asked a few questions so many times since I put frontal videos up. So firstly, I want to thank you all for sticking around, and secondly, I want to thank you all for trusting in me to teach you all. Um, these are just a few frontal installations I've done over the past few days. Um, this girl requested this particular style. This is before I put a little edge tamer on it, and that's after. But yeah, frontals are a game changer for hairstylists. And, um, this particular client right here is a client in this video. She's using my hair, which is from my website hairinkkansascity.com. And this is the frontal before I customize it, and this is after. And this shows you the front is not glued down, it's not gelled down or anything, and it doesn't need baby hairs to look natural. Um, so yeah, hope you guys enjoy this video. As you know, my videos are very deep, detailed, and informative, so if you all have questions, please comment them and I will try to get you a newer video, um, with more updated information. This is my deep wave Brazilian hair that she is using. And, um, all right, so let's get started. I'll put up a little picture in the upper right corner showing what the frontal will look like, but of course this is before the customizing started. I do not bleach my frontals any longer, nor do I tint the lace. So if you all are seeing this video This video is giving you an update on how I customize my frontals and what's changed since the last video I posted. I do not bleach the knots on lace frontals any longer because the bleach does take away from the longevity of the frontal. So if a customer is planning on using her frontal over and over, it's kind of taking away from the life of it when you have to bleach those knots. We all know as hairstylists, we sometimes walk away from the frontal and the bleach seeps, the bleach seeps onto their extensions, onto the frontal sometimes. Or sometimes, um, the bleach doesn't get enough, you have to bleach it again. Then maybe you over-process it. It's just too much that goes along with bleaching the knots of frontals. Um, and again, it takes away from the lifespan of the frontal. Secondly, with, um, tinting the lace using the Rit fabric dye. These are all things that I did because I saw them on YouTube, just like you, you saw my video and you attempted it on, um, the strength of a video you saw on YouTube. So I have stopped tinting the lace. Um, tinting a lace can be very risky. If it comes out too dark, you're stuck, and if it's not dark enough, you have to tint it again, but you won't know until the customer gets there. Then it just takes away from your time, and my clients are always booked back to back to back, so it is very time-consuming to tint lace and it not be right. And we all know as hairstylists, if you distribute your own hair, you do not want to keep having to replace people's frontals, and it's just, it's not a good business. Um, it's not a good a good business, um, strategy. They have to tint lace and it not be exactly their color because there's no way to know what that lace is going to come out as. Okay, so anywho— oh my God, I say anywho in every video, I really do. So instead of tinting the lace, what do I do? I would recommend you all go and buy a, um, a contour palette. You know, contour— if you all know anything about makeup, and if you don't, this will be a lesson for you— contour palettes have a lighter color, a dark color, medium brown, dark color. You know, they have all the highlight and low light colors in them, so you have every shade of someone's complexion. And if you don't, you can mix a couple and get their exact shade. So I actually apply the, the makeup to the bottom of their frontal, and then on their hairline, I will also apply the, the custom color, whatever it may be. You may have to play around with colors once they get there. Most scalps have one color unless they're extremely light or they're extremely darker, their scalp tends to be the same color. But you can mess around with your palette and just mess around when you're doing your customers, um, even if you have to play around with your sister or someone like that's hair. Just, um, that's the way you'll get it down. So I actually apply the, the makeup underneath it When I part it, I'll apply the makeup. And, um, I would recommend my customers get like a makeup— whatever makeup palette, just a concealer. And you can go to a hair store and buy a concealer palette that will come with all of those different shades. That way they don't have to go to MAC or anything or use their own personal makeup for their frontal. But that is the way to get the perfect exact match for your client. Um, so that is a new thing that I do. Another thing that I do is sometimes I will pluck the frontal when it's on their head, and that's what I'm doing in this video. It's a lot easier to see versus me putting it on a mannequin head. It's easier for you to see how does this look on her, how does what I'm plucking look on her. And when you're plucking or tweezing a frontal The best way to see what you're doing is to see it on their scalp, to kind of stand back and look at it as you're tweezing and see like, okay, this is just enough, or okay, I need to tweeze a little bit more right here, or this part needs a little bit more makeup. You want to stand there and look at it. You want to also look at it in the mirror, stand back behind the client and face her to the mirror and kind of look in the mirror and see like, okay, what looks good, what doesn't. Um, you want to make sure she looks good all the way around. Frontals are such a magic trick that people expect, you know, them to just come in, put the frontal on, and it look good. But no, it takes time, which is why what you charge for a frontal should reflect how much work you put into it. So as you see, I sped this up, um, times 2. Now I can speed it up times 4, times 8, but I sped it up times 2, and that means that it's not going very fast, but it's not going normal speed either. So I just wanted you all to see how much it takes to pluck a frontal. I am pulling some of those hairs out, and I'm tweezing behind the hairline. I'm tweezing the hairline as well. So there is no set tweeze here, tweeze there, one-two step. No, you have to tweeze according to what their hairline looks like what looks good on them. So cutting the baby hairs as well is something totally different. I personally am not a fan of the super S-curl baby hairs. I like something that if she pulls all of those hairs on that frontal back, that it looks like it's coming straight out of her scalp. Um, so you'll see the kind of cut that I do and how it makes it look a little bit more natural to me., and you'll see kind of the brush that I use when I'm putting foundation. So this video is just basically me showing start to finish what it looks like to customize a lace frontal. If you're thinking that your time takes a little bit longer, it's not just you, it's everyone. So you may ask yourself, Titi, how long— or you may want to ask me, how long does it take you to do a frontal install? For me, it can take 2 hours— well, it will take me 2 hours if not less to install the lace frontal and the bundles behind it. And I typically use 3 bundles and no more. And my lace frontals are 13 by 5 inches, and whatever length they want their hair, I put those behind it. So it takes me 2 hours to install that, and here is where you're about to see me cut those baby hairs. And if you didn't catch that, you'll see me do the other side. Um, and I cut them so short, it's like a centimeter long. But you see, it just— baby hair— a customer's natural hairline does not have 1-inch long baby hairs. Like, their hair is very short around their hairline. So this just kind of blends the frontal in with their hair. If they want the inch-long hairs, I'll do it, but this is more of the look that I like, that I kind of feel like is natural. Let's freeze that and let's look at her hair. Look at that hairline and look at where I've cut. You cannot tell what is her hair and what's the frontal hair, and that's exactly what you want when your customer leaves your chair. So this is the Brazilian deep wave hair again, and I'm going to straighten it out for her because she did want it straight. But I am applying that color, and which is— it may be a mixture of multiple colors from that palette. But whatever blends, and you kind of rub your finger in it a little bit just to kind of smooth it out and make it blend in with her scalp and her forehead because her scalp is lighter. So I'll show you all the finished look. I have another video if you click the link in the— the link in the description. I'll show you exactly how I keep my frontals from sliding back without using any tape or glue or any gel. So thanks for tuning in, guys. See you on the next video.
