How To Sell Hair Extensions 1of5

LaToya Kelly built a hair-extension business starting from church braiding gigs and YouTube tutorials. She switched to selling virgin hair in 2012 through a Kansas City distributor and warns that many suppliers inflate prices. She sticks with Brazilian deep-wave hair because it has a low complaint rate and mimics natural texture.

Hey everyone, it is your girl TT, as I usually say, and I'm back with a video as to how to become a successful hairstylist, a video about cosmetology schools, and what else? Whatever else I can think of that you guys have asked me that I haven't answered yet on my YouTube channel. I wanted to learn cut and color, and my friend and I, we wanted to go, we wanted to open up our own salon. And I honestly didn't think that I was going to be a full-time hairstylist. I never ever thought that this would be what I do every day. My favorite thing about Acuity Scheduling is— So a lot of you are asking for videos of me doing my own hair, and please do not think that you need a license to be a successful hairstylist. I'm 28 years old. I've been doing hair since I was a child. I started out braiding my sister and my mom's hair, and in church other people would see their hair and they would want me to do their hair. So then I started doing different people at church. Eventually I went to college and people in college started noticing that I did hair, my sorority sisters, YouTube. I started putting my micro braid videos on YouTube and a lot of people noticed that I was really fast, so I got a lot of exposure that way. And Facebook and Instagram— Instagram literally was rolling out as I was starting to sell virgin hair. And a lot of people ask me about selling virgin hair. I got into selling virgin hair not because it was a good market to make money out of, because it was starting out when I started selling it. And it wasn't starting out, it just wasn't as big as it is now. So I started selling hair in 2012, and I started selling hair in 2012, and I started selling hair because I was already doing sew-ins, but people were coming with terrible hair. And some people came with awesome hair, and I'm like, there has to be better hair out here. So I started researching and researching, and I found a company because I thought, hey, I want to open up a hair boutique in Kansas City. So that's what I researched. I saw one and I reached out to that company and I started selling hair as that company. Now, I had my own hair extensions that I was trying out different vendors. My client actually came with a particular brand of hair and I loved it and I got in contact with that distributor and I have been in contact with that distributor since 2012. So, in my launch party in 2012, 2012, my hair that I was selling was all from the company that I contacted and started working for or with or whatever. Eventually, with the distributor I found, I end up liking that hair more than I like the company that I was with. So, um, I ended up bringing my hair to the company. The owner of the company knew that I was selling this hair, and she didn't like it as much as I did. She was in a totally different region, and the hair that she was selling worked better for that region. Um, I stuck to my hair and I have had literally 2 complaints on it since. My Brazilian deep wave hair, which is under the company hairinkansascity.com, um, I've had 2 complaints literally and I love it. That's the hair I stand by, that's the hair I have in, that's the hair that you see in most of my videos that I post. Um, and yeah, if you find something, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So That is my story. As far as nowadays, it is very hard to come by a distributor that hasn't already been found, and it's hard to come by a company that's not only trying to make money off of you. So I hope that was clear. Most companies that will sell, sell hair to you now are trying to make money off of you, so they're going to sell it to you for triple the price that they're actually paying for it, which is why I just stick to my distributor and I go there. That way. Um, what else? So yeah, it's kind of hard to tell you how to get started selling hair when everybody sells hair, from good to bad. And if you find good hair, usually you find it from a company that's in the States, and they're not going to give you their distributor because they want to make money off of you. So yeah, um, what else? That is how I got into selling hair. I do enjoy selling hair. I enjoy it because because, don't get me wrong, I can make a good deal of money selling hair, but it's not about the money. I could sell this hair for far more because so many people love it and word of mouth has spread so far that it's just a really popular texture. So at this point it's just about getting good hair in people's heads and stop seeing people walking around with matted up weaves and just dry weaves or shiny silky weaves. Like, I need something in the middle that I can make it silky if I want it silky, and I can make it dry if I want it dry, you know, like I just need something that is like my hair. One thing that African Americans have made for them amongst many things is the fact that we can change our hair in so many ways, like we can go from straight to curly to spiked up to down to smooth to shaved off to long to short, we can do so many things with our hair and it's just amazing to have a texture of hair that we can also treat the same as we treat our own. Version hair school. Next up, cosmetology schools.
