Things you need to do a sew in!!

LaToya Kelly breaks down every product and tool she uses for sew-ins, from dark-brown thread and curved needles to KeraCare grease for braiding and Wild Growth oil for moisture. She uses a BaByliss ceramic flat iron that reaches 450°F and stresses that the net must never touch the scalp, ears, or hairline.

Hi everyone, this is Titi, Titi Does My Hair, LaToya Kelly, whichever one you know me as. I just wanted to basically create a video so you can see exactly what my necessities are for my sew-in. So these are things that either I really, really enjoy or I will not do a sew-in without. So even when I travel, these are things that I have to have in my bag, and if I don't have to have them, I have to go get them. Hey guys, before I forget, go follow me on Instagram. It's TT Does My Hair. My Facebook is facebook.com/TTDoesMyHair. TT does my hair everything. So the most important thing is my thread. My thread is actually a dark brown thread. I don't actually use black thread. I used to use a really thin thread for sew-ins, and I don't use that anymore because it's kind of pointless. I mean, it's it's hard to see, it's thin, and when it comes to taking it out, it's harder for the customer. So I'd rather something be simpler for the customer than easier for me or whatever. So I really use the dark brown. I don't use black, I don't use blondes, I use dark brown. And let's see, so that's the number 1. And number 1 might actually need to be a needle, but, but it is not, cuz I can use any needle. Um, the needle that I use is actually— you see it? So it's actually considered a long needle, and it's curve, and if you see the tip, the tip is very, very sharp. I don't like dull needles because, um, at the very end of the track and the very beginning of the track, I do go through the weft. So in order to do that, depending on what kind of tracks you have, it's not as difficult with a sharper needle. I have poked myself a few times, and it has taken some adjustments, but it's worth it. So those, the needle and thread, are my number one items that pretty much need to do a sew-in. Um, I work with two combs. I work with the rat tail comb with the metal end, and I also work with the rat tail comb that's like a thicker, but it still has that sharper ends, and it's the plastic one. The reason why I have two— this one I like to part better with it. Parting is a lot easier with this metal tip, and it's also easier with the tip of the comb. So this comb is my parter comb. It's if somebody has really natural coily hair, when I'm flat ironing it, I can get through it a lot more crisp with a thinner comb, whereas this is a lot more spaced out, a lot more open. But if a client's hair is already straight, kind of straight, and I just need to kind of go over it, I will go over with this because this will melt. And that's why I actually, um, if their hair is not very curly, I'll just use this to straighten it out with and comb it out and everything with. Um, along with combing in my braids, I prefer 3 different clips. Um, I like the long clip, I like these short ones for edges, and I like my little butterfly clips. And the little ones like this are pretty much a rip-off. I hate them because they hold no hair. If I needed to hold all of my hair up, I can hold all of my hair up with this one clip if I wanted to. Simple. With the other ones, I just can't do that. So I actually prefer the bigger butterfly clips, which I have to have regardless. Um, when I am actually braiding, before I start even sewing in, I actually grease each braid as I go. So I part, I grease with my KeraCare, and I actually braid with grease. So whereas some stylists don't prefer grease, I actually grease as I go. After I'm done with my braids, I actually use Wild Growth hair oil in the scalp, and I put it through each and every braid, and my clients go wild. But, um, I just want to make sure the hair is moisturized because I have clients who leave their hair up as long as 5 months. So, um, making sure that they have appropriate amount of moisture is very important to me. So, um, Let's see, so I'm sewing in, I'm sewing in nets. I don't care about nets. I use nets now, but I don't have a preference. I can use hard, soft, long, short, whatever. There are some that you can just kind of stretch them out. I don't have a preference as far as nets. I can make anything work. One thing, excuse me, that I always, one thing that I always do is I make sure that the net is not touching their ears, their neck, the front of their hairline. It is always cut right to the braid, so there should be no net touching your scalp. There's no reason for irritation or anything. Um, as for sewing, you know, I showed you the needle and thread and everything. And as far as afterwards, um, my hair is Brazilian Deep Wave. And this is a shampoo, brush it while it's wet, and I let it air dry. And one thing that I use on my clients— let's just say I'm putting their hair in straight from the bundle and it's already a little coily with the deep wave hair, it's already a little curly— I will actually put in a water bottle, um, It's almost gone, but I use conditioner mixed with water in here. And the conditioner that I use is actually the Moroccan oil conditioner. Um, I actually use some of that and then I put some water in there, shake it up real good. And while I'm doing my customer's hair, you know, when I'm done, I just spray it with this. And if I want to add a little shine, which everyone asks what do I use for my shine, I use Rezac Perfect for Perms Hair Oil. I cannot find this in like a hair store for licensed cosmetologists, which I have an apprentice license, so I'm able to go in there, but I actually do not see this in licensed stores. It's only in select hair stores. So this is my favorite hair oil. When using it, you have to use it with caution because if you use too much, it it will weigh down the hair and you will hate it for the rest of your life. But, um, I actually know that there are people who hate spritz and hate holding spray, but sometimes there are those few little hairs that you need to get out of the way and that won't lay down with anything you use on it. So I still use the traditional pump it up from time to time if I need it, um, just to kind of lay down the leave-out. I don't use it when styling, so I don't flat iron and spritz and flat iron and spritz. I just actually use it to kind of lay down the flying hairs. I also have Perfect for Perm Non-Holding, I'm sorry, Non-Aerosheen Holding Sheen, which I do like for my natural clients, but nothing beats Pump It Up. Pump It Up is always going to be the number one winner. Um, last thing is when I'm flat ironing, what flat irons are my favorite? My favorite flat irons right now— I have so many. I have every kind of flat iron you can imagine between Paul Mitchell, Chi, whatever. Um, Babyliss are my favorite line. Um, my— this ceramic flat iron goes up to actually, um 450 degrees and it is, um, an inch and a half or— I'm sorry, inch and a quarter, I think, an inch and a quarter wide. And I like this better than your traditional 1-inch flat irons because you can get bigger curls when you're curling it with a flat iron, which I don't use curling irons anymore, I just use my flat iron. Um, so when you're getting curls, you can curl a lot easier and faster when you have longer hair like mine, which is 28 inches. You can do a lot faster with this, and it's the hottest, so it goes to 450 degrees, so it gets hot. It's quickly heated, it's wider, so it catches more hair, and it's faster. Um, the last thing that I will not do a sewing without. And actually, this is, this is my favorite, but another thing are these scissors. Um, I won't do a sewing without these. I have big scissors, little scissors, but I need the scissors with a point at the tip so that I can reach in between little threads and kind of just open it and snap it. And, um, they have to be the smaller ones. I don't like the big scissors. And, um, And then as I was saying, my last thing is the BaByliss ceramic half-inch flat iron, and it's called the Mini. I know it's kind of worn down, but it's my favorite. Um, this thing catches any baby hair you need. Um, all my little baby hairs, I use them, and then I put on my edge tamer. Um, so I actually straighten out curly edges before before I put edge tamer on, then I put my edge tamer on. So I use KeraCare for my edges, and that is something that a lot of my customers love and request. So those are a few of the things that I use, um, on my sew-ins. If I had to choose— if I had to choose besides my needle and thread, if I had to choose 3 things out here that I would not leave without. 3 things I would— I don't like braiding dry hair, so I would choose my KeraCare grease over the oil. So I take my grease, I take my hair oil for my after, which it's, it's flawless. So I got two, and I take this, um, without KeraCare. I can make edges look wonderful with this. So these are my favorite, my top favorite items. I don't like braiding on dry hair, so this is my favorite. My after for my sheen, for laying those frizzy hairs down sometimes, is this, and it makes the hair a lot more manageable. And then like I said, I can tame short hair, long hair, I just have to take smaller sections with this and this will be one of my favorite flat irons ever next to the big one. So again, it's the BaBylissPRO if you can read it. And yeah, if you have any questions, suggestions, I do not do micro braids anymore so I won't answer any micro braid questions. Questions. The Beverly Johnson hair everybody's asking for, I have no idea where to get it from, and I actually don't think they make it anymore, which sucks because it was the best. But I don't do braids anymore, I'm strictly sew-ins, so any questions regarding sew-ins you have or video requests, just go ahead and let me know and I will reply, which I will either be making the video or I won't.
