Updated 🔓 How to do a sew in Part 2

LaToya Kelly shows stylists which tools and products work best for sew-in extensions. She compares flat irons (BaByliss for straight edges, Chi for curls), reviews finishing products like Razorette Polishing Gloss and KeraCare Edge Tamer, and warns that heat plus spritz causes breakage. Her travel kit includes needles, scissors, a carbon comb, thread, and a flat iron.

My number 1 must-have is this, especially when someone's using a leave-out. I've had this in numerous videos, but it is the, the BaByliss Nano Titanium Pro. You see how small it is. This is what I use for all of the edges and any of the baby hairs. And like I said, if I don't have a wand to flat iron a lace closure like I need to, to section out that part, I can use this for it., and I can just kind of part it wherever I want it and just kind of press it out on each side of the part. Um, so here I can use this for that. Let's see if, um, I keep two different flat irons, and these are two that I have, but I have multiples because I moved from St. Louis— or I moved from Kansas City to St. Louis, and I still come back to Kansas City to work for two weeks. I have stuff in Kansas City, I have stuff in St. Louis, and I also have my stuff that travels with me. So these two flat irons, um, this particular one is an inch and a half wide and it's longer. So it's not an inch and a half wide and short, it's actually the full length wide. And this is the Nano Titanium Babyliss Pro, and this is actually, um, It has the numbers on it to where you can set it all the way up to 450, which my mini one goes to 450 as well. Um, this one is used when people want their hair bone straight, and it gets it straight. Literally, I can go with my comb behind it, pull that hair in, and just go one stroke, and it'll be bone straight and silky. So this I use when people want their hair straight. I do not curl with it. If people want like huge body curls, I will. When I am flat ironing hair straight, I like to go with a titanium shiny plate, and then when I am curling hair, I like to go with a ceramic plate. My ceramic plate is only 1 inch wide, and this is actually a Chi iron. It's old as the trees, so I don't know how much it is or where I got it from. The other two I get from State Beauty Supply, which you do have to have a license to go in, but I'm sure you can get them on Amazon or eBay or something like that. But this one is more of that ceramic plate that you all are used to, and it's only 1 inch wide. It's still just as long as the Titanium plate, but I use this to curl hair. So when you see that I've done curls with this, curls that are like really nice and mild like SSS, I have used this one. And again, I do not use stove irons. These are my number one go-to products and irons that I love to use. And honestly, for curls and stuff like that, I do love my Chi. For straightening, I love my Nano Titanium Babyliss. Can't be beat. So after styling, of course, there are my finishing products that I love to use. And at first, in my last video, it was the same company by Rezac, except it was their oil. Their— it's just their hair oil. But the company sent me a box and it had new products, new labeling on the old products. And if you all remember in that one of those frontal videos, I was using that white cream between parts instead of this grease. That was something that the company sent to me and I used it out until it was gone. But this Razorette Perfect for Perms and all hair types is called Polishing Gloss and I will literally just, let's say this is so-and-so and everything's done, the leave-out's all straightened out and everything's good to go, I'll just apply a little bit of drops which you saw me doing probably my last couple of videos. Put it on my hands, smooth it out, and then I may go over it one more time with the flat iron with the weave mixed with their natural hair and just kind of melt it into there. So it kind of infuses the natural leave-out with their extensions, and I love it. It smells so good. Oh my God, it gets like this natural shine to your hair, and it— when I say it smells so good as well, it smells wonderful. I have heard a lot of things on my previous video about blending in curly hair with, um, your natural leave-out. And, um, I love Pump It Up. Spritz and Pump It Up have been out for years and years and years, so it's not something that I'm just bringing to the table. It's something that I've adapted from my previous hairstylist. And I'm— it is flammable just like most hairsprays. Um, here's the thing with leave-out I hear a lot of people saying spritz breaks your hair out, this breaks your hair out, but the thing is you cannot spritz your hair down and keep applying heat over and over and over, especially 450-degree heat. You're basically frying your hair. So this is the way that I use it. I heat the hair first, I lay it exactly where I want it, and then I use the spritz over it to lay it in with the hair. And I rarely will heat over it, but if I do, it's that one time. It's a one trip over it and that's it. Once you continue to put this on your hair and flat iron it and pour more and then flat iron it again, that's when you get the, the, the, um, that's when you'll start getting breakage. So with your leave out, with my leave out right now, if I This has been— my hair is not combed or anything, it's looked a mess for days. I'm sorry, I just really want to get this video out the way for you guys. But, um, with this Pump It Up, let's just say my hair's been— Pump It Up's been holding it down for a week or two. The next time I go to apply Pump It Up, I will pull my leave-out out and I will go shampoo it and I will towel dry it, blow dry it, flat iron it, and then put the Pump It Up back on it again. So you see, I'm not just gonna look at it like, oh my God, my leave-out is so crazy, I need to fix it. I'm not just gonna go put heat to it again and put some more spritz on it. I'm gonna wash out the product that I already have in it and then reapply the spritz. So reapplying spritz and reapplying the heat to old spritz is what's causing your leave-out to break off. Um, my favorite shampoo— and a lot of you all know if you've seen my Instagram and been around when I was in cosmetology school— I don't use a lot of conditioner products. I believe that a lot of products are meant to make money off of, um, hair loss. Typically it's hereditary or because of glue pulling your hair out, you know. It's, it's not something that you can apply a product and roots are just going to magically appear. That's why there's surgeons out here that use hair plugs, you know. So if it was that easy, people would be having a lot more hair than they do. It's really some thinning hair is hereditary or it's caused by some stressful sew-ins or stuff like that, which is why I braid the way I braid, which is why I don't pull my braids straight from the hairline back. That's why they come from the leave-out part. So there are parts of your hair that are stronger than others, which is why I do it how I do it. Um, as far as shampoo, I found this in the Seattle store, and this is actually what I use back home, so I was so happy to find it. But I will shampoo my hair with this It's one and only, and when I tell you it's made with argan oil and it cleans and it restores it back to a natural moisture level. So I love it. Just massage it into your scalp, rinse it out, repeat as you need, and then, you know, towel dry it, blow dry it, straighten it out, and apply whatever you need to do to it. So those are my products. Let's see, the last video I think I said if I were going somewhere and I only had room for 5 things, what would I take? Still remains to be my mini. I usually use 5 to 7 needles, but I'll only take one and one, so that's 3 items gone. I would have to have my scissors, of course, to cut the thread and Yeah, so that's 1, 2, 3, 4. That's 4 items right here. Hmm, my comb. I would have to have my comb. That— those are the things that I cannot go without. Um, This right here is my KeraCare Edge Tamer, which I use in most of my videos. Here it was $8.99, but this is a small one. This is 2.3 ounces. The one I use is probably, um, it may be about 4 ounces. I mean, it's a lot bigger than this one, the one that I usually use, but this is my travel size one. Again, as long as I have this bad boy, I don't really need the edge tamer. I can pretty much get anything straight with these. Um, yeah, I can do the leave-out with this. I can just work extra hard and not use the products on the leave-out if I need to. I can use the comb in replacement of clips if I have to section the hair out and hold it away. Um, the only thing I would be compromising, of course, um, would be the scalp treatment. Um, that can be something that is purchased wherever. KeraCare is sold in many hair stores, either it's behind the counter or something. But my comb I bring with me because not every place sells carbon combs. My needle— a lot of people like to play around with the sharp needles because they're safety, blah blah. And then my thread is a must-have. My flat iron is a must-have as well. And that is it, you guys. I hope I have answered a lot of you all's questions. I have a lot of things here on my table which, um, you all have asked for an updated video, so this is just that. And, um, yeah, you guys, look, if you watch my last video, I just left Reno last week, and look, my lip is back to normal. So I don't know, of course the things around the mouth heal a lot faster, you know, if you've ever bit your tongue or something, you notice a sore on your arm will last forever, whereas you bit your tongue and 24 hours later you forgot you did it, but yeah, my lip is 100% healed now and I may have a little scar there, I don't know, but whatever. If you have any questions, make sure you go ahead and comment below. Please thumbs up this video if it answered a few of your questions that you all had, and share this video with fellow stylists, a friend that you know that's getting into doing sew-ins or whatever. But, um, I am over and out until the next video, which actually uploads Friday. So see you guys soon!
