BIG Changes Coming to Facebook Ads!

Hernán Vázquez explains Facebook's shift to Campaign Budget Optimization, which moves budget control from ad sets to campaigns. CBO helped one e-commerce client scale dramatically but hurt a book funnel by overspending on high-CPA ads. Facebook is phasing out ad-set budgets by September 2019.

All right, what is going on everybody? We're gonna go live in a bunch of places as usual. How are you guys today? Hope you guys are super well. Welcome to this live stream. Today is the 5th of February and it's 11:31 AM in Buenos Aires. Beautiful sunny day today as well, and I have some really good stuff to share with you guys today. Let me actually share this with my group. Which is called Digital Marketing Strategies for Entrepreneurs. And if you want to join, you can come and, you know, type that on the Facebook search box and you can come and join. And it's pretty cool, we have a lot of fun and whatnot. So it's shared there. Hope you guys are super well. What's up, Jason? What's up, Wayne? Irene, how are you, my people? Stand by because I have some really big announcements when it comes to Facebook ads, okay? And if you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to help you guys out with that. Now with that being said, let me cue this intro. All right, there we go. I don't know what happened there. That was kind of wonky. Anyways, here we are. All right guys, welcome. Good morning. Hope you guys are super well. What's up, Juan? Jason, my man. Um, how about now? Oops, sorry about that. How about now? Yeah, I might have, I might have screwed that up. Sorry about that, guys. Can you guys hear me now? Sorry about that. What's up, Chris on the Facebook? Yeah, I know, I'm sorry about that. My bad, I'm operating and doing a bunch of stuff. Chris from YouTube and the guys are on the Facebook. All right, awesome. Yeah, if you check yesterday's, I think we had some We got some. I swear to God that yesterday had a had audio. All right, so here we go. Yesterday, I had a pretty interesting conversation with one of my Facebook reps, and you will start noticing that some signs are appearing on Facebook. All right, and it's basically saying that the entire budget allocation that we're doing right now on Facebook is changing, and it's gonna be much. Similar to what AdWords is doing. So here's the thing. Right now we allocate budget on our different campaigns on a budget level, on an ad set level, right? So we go in each ad set, whatnot, and we change it to $5, $10 per day. We scale up, we scale down, blah, blah, blah. Now Facebook has been rolling out something called a campaign budget optimization, which is called— which is basically you set up the budget on the campaign level. So you have campaign level, ad set level, ad level. All right, so you set up the budget on the campaign level and you will let Facebook figure out how to allocate that budget to your different ad sets. So let's say that you have 10 ad sets within a Facebook Ads campaign. Now on the campaign budget optimization type of campaigns, which is an option that you need to turn off on— turn on on Facebook, then you will set up the budget at the campaign level. All right, now the reality is that according to my rep and according to a bunch of other people and according to what I'm seeing on Facebook, that is going to be the standard way of setting up budgets moving forward. What I'm, what I'm saying is that what Facebook is saying is that all of the budget is moving up from the ad set level into the campaign level. So what that basically means is 2 things. Number one is they're doing an effort to push the campaign budget optimization to make you as an advertiser, as a media buyer, to slowly shift your attention from budget at the ad level to budget on the campaign level. What that basically means is that the sooner you start using the campaign budget optimization, the more used to running on a campaign budget level you're gonna be 2 to 3 months when they phase out completely the budget at the ad set level. All right, so sorry. So that is number one, that is the first thing that you want to have in mind. Now the other thing is— What's up, John? How are you doing, man? Good to have you. So, um, the other thing that you want to have in mind is that we as advertisers, there will be some stuff that we need to have in mind when it comes to being granular with our ad sets. So for instance, let's say that I have 5 different ad sets, right, on— running on Facebook, and each of those ad sets have different, um, reaches or different audiences sizes. Okay, let's say that one has like 1 million, 3 million, 5 million, or whatnot. So that means that by setting up a campaign, uh, the budget at the campaign level, Facebook will determine, okay, so these ad sets are working better than the others. And the reality is that sometimes the decisions that Facebook makes are not decisions that we want to make as media buyers. So for instance, I was working with a consulting client. This was like last week. We launched a campaign budget optimization for his e-commerce store and it completely killed it. Like we had amazing results like off the bat. Conversely, I launched a campaign budget optimization for another consulting client on a book funnel and it bombed. Like Facebook assigned that the highest, uh, you know, the highest CPA or, or the, the ad sets that were hanging— that were having the higher CPA were the ones that were winning. So if we were spending like $2,000 per day on that campaign, that all of our $2,000 will go into that ad set. Okay, so that will allow us to have like a less granular control on the ad set level. It will be kind of, um, I would say it would be kind of simpler to manage because you don't have to, you don't have to manage like 15 different or 1,500 different million ad sets and whatnot and their budget and whatnot. It will be either easier to scale because the campaign budget optimizations right now, they hold scaling really, really well. Meaning I went from— I launched this e-commerce store campaign that I told you, I launched it at I think it was $500. We went immediately to $1,000, then 24 hours later I bumped it to $1,500 and the CPA stayed there, which is a big no-no when it comes to running with ad sets. Okay, so that is something that you want to have in mind. Facebook is gonna be completely phasing out the budget campaign— the budget at the ad set level, and it's gonna turn it into budget to the campaign level, which is more like what AdWords is like operating at this point in time. Okay, so the sooner you start playing with campaign budget optimization, the sooner you will be able to get used to this specific stuff. All right, so hope that makes sense. Do you guys have any questions? Let's see. John, great to have you, man. Brian, Dave, Diana— how are you doing, Diana? Frank, what's up? So let me see if you guys have any questions. And again, this is what I know so far, and I just talked to my— I talked to my rep. You yesterday, so I really don't know. You know, I'm telling you guys as I go, and you will start seeing on some accounts— I'm starting to see that, hey, we're gonna be phasing out the budget level at the ad set, the ad set level. So you want to start playing with campaign budget optimization to get used to that. Okay, so let's see. Jason, what are you using for the lower third? I'm right now— I'm using an application called vMix. That is what I'm using for everything that you see here, to the no sound intro as well. Jason is saying, so they spread it out, so they spread it out through every ad set. So that's actually a great question, Jason. So what Facebook is basically saying is that they're not gonna be spreading that out evenly. They're gonna be allocating your budget to the best-performing ad sets. So again, let's say that you have 20 ad sets and within that campaign, all of them going to, you know, specific— like a specific objective, right? Let's say that you want to get leads to a funnel or a webinar funnel or a PDF funnel, whatever that is. So a webinar funnel, they will be allocating the budget automatically based on their algorithm to the different ad sets. So it's not gonna be even unless there are a couple of hacks that you can use, and I'm not talking about that today. I just wanted to make this announcement. I'm not talking about that today because I want to actually experiment those hacks where you will effectively tell Facebook, hey Facebook, give me at least this amount of impressions on each ad set before you make the call. Okay, so there are a little bit— there's some hacks, but go ahead and try campaign budget optimization because in some cases it works, in some cases, you know, I had 2 big campaigns running. On one case it Worked really well. On the other case, it didn't work well at all. What's up, Arpit? Amanda, let me go through the questions. Let's see. Ah, Ah San or Ashan. Sorry, buddy. I have a question. Facebook is approving my ads but not running and deducing my money. Even ads running for three four days but not placing my ads. What to do? Running my ads in three years but having this issue now. Okay, so are you saying that your ad sets are not delivering? that they are delivering? Like, I don't understand. So is it like— because if your ads is— if your ads are not delivering, you shouldn't be paying Facebook any money. If you have conversion ads running, if you have conversion ads running, then you pay per impression, okay? But you shouldn't be paying Facebook any money if your ads are not delivering. So I'm not sure about your question, but if you could retype it again, I will be sure that I Um, you know, to answer that. So that, uh, Jason on the Facebook is asking, uh, on the Facebooks, okay, so does that mean we're not able to target main groups? Yes, you will be able to. The targeting abilities on Facebook are not going away, right? So the targeting abilities on Facebook will still remain the same. However, there might be some changes to the, um, there might be some changes to the way we deploy campaigns, because right now the way I deploy campaigns, for instance, is I'll have One campaign with 20 different ad sets targeting different people, targeting different stuff. So right now I might have a campaign, I might have a lot more campaigns running because I want to have a campaign that's targeting this specific demographic, then I'll have another campaign targeting this specific demographic. So I don't— the answer to that, Jason, is I don't know. Like, I need to test this, right, a lot before telling you guys, but I just wanted to tell you guys that this is coming so that you can be prepared, pretty much. All right, let's see. Um, so as I'm following up, they're not delivering. So if they're not delivering, there could be a couple of reasons. I have a YouTube— I have a, um, a video on YouTube that is why your ads are not delivering. So go ahead and search on my channel delivery or something like that. I tell you, I think there are like 5 or 6 tips on what to do when your Facebook ads are not delivering. So that you can start doing that. So it might be that your bid is too low or that your audiences are too small, or maybe the creative is, you know, weird, acting weird. All right, so Diana is asking, before we would test different ad sets and have budget per ad set, so now we would have a campaign budget and we can add as many ad sets as we want and we'll change charges per ad set? Correct, Diana, correct. That would be a fair a correct statement. Now the thing that you want to have in mind is that Facebook will auto— automatically optimize the budget for each of those ad sets. So if you indiscriminately add ad sets to that campaign, that it might skew the amount of allocation that is going to each ad set. Okay, so have that in mind. But again, there might be some things that we can see say Facebook, tell Facebook, hey Facebook, just evenly spend the, you know, the money for the campaign on these 4 ad sets, like 25% of each ad set, and those type, that type stuff. Okay, but yeah, basically it stopped charge— it will stop charging you per ad set, but everything will go into the— everything will go into the campaign level. Now with that being said, guys, let me do the proverbial offer for the day. If you want to get more information about how to set up your campaigns the right way, how to run ads the right way, the right way, and how to get people paying you over and over again, then go ahead and get a copy of my brand new book, Perpetual Profits. You can get that at perpetualprofits.net. If somebody would go ahead and do me the favor to type that on the chat box of the comments, I would really appreciate it. It's perpetualprofits.net, and it's there. It's $5.60. and it's pretty cool. All right, so if somebody could go ahead and put that in the comments, I would really, really appreciate that. So is this considered better or worse? Well, I don't know. Here's the thing, man. Here's the thing. This is a change that Facebook will be implementing, okay? And this is actually a great point. So this is— thank you, Wayne. I do appreciate you, buddy. Thank you. So this is a question that comes up a lot. Like every time a campaign changes or a platform changes, Is it better or is it worse? In my case, or in my opinion, it's better. Why? Because a lot of advertisers that are doing the same things over and over and over again will go out of business. Now, us, the type of advertisers, you guys that are here with me live today, and all of the advertisers in the community and the media buyers that are out there trying to break things and trying to learn new things, will be benefited by this change just because of the fact that, you know, we'll get like a lot of, you know, a lot of advertisers go out of business. That means that it's a lot of, you know, there's a lot of inventory, if you would, that is wide open for us. So it's not a question of is it better or is it worse? It's a question of, okay, it's different. What do I need to do to adapt to this new situation. Okay, so is this something that is going to start now? I have a trial client who's going to set up campaign for this coming week. No, it's gonna be a couple of— in a couple of months, Diana. So let me actually check when are they saying that this is gonna be starting. Let me actually tell you guys, I think it's gonna be in a couple of months, but in the meantime you can start doing the campaign budget optimization thingy. Uh, let's see, where did I see this? Because I saw the sign. I don't actually remember where the, um, where the thing was saying that it will change on, uh, you know, my— let me, let me actually ask. Let me actually, uh, check on the message that I got from my rep. Hold on just a second. So September September 2019. So we have more than a lot of time. We have a lot of time. September 2019. All right, so we have time, we have time. But you guys want to start, you know, utilizing campaign budget optimization from right now. So you're good, Diana, you're good. You just close that trial client, focus on getting new clients. I got you. Can you send me a link of the lower third you're using? The lower third is like a graphic that I made, Jason, but the application is called Veeam VMix or Open Broadcaster Software, okay? OBS. Uh, there, uh, vMix has a 60-day trial and, uh, then, um, uh, OBS is free. Let's see. All right guys, any additional questions that I can help you guys with? If not, I'll call it quits. Go ahead and start implementing, and if you haven't yet, go ahead and get a copy of Perpetual Profits. gonna leave it there on screen. All right, everybody. Okay, as usual, I don't see any more questions. So as usual, thank you for spending the time with me. Thank you for, you know, being so awesome. Thank you for the support. Thank you for everything.
