Vanessa Van Edwards says liars avoid hand gestures. Observers weight gestures 12.5 times more heavily than words when judging if someone's telling the truth. Using clear hand movements makes you appear more credible and intelligent.
Liars don't use hand gestures. Think about it, liars practice their verbal. So if I'm telling the truth, right, if I say to you, "Jennifer, today I have a big idea. Look how big it is." You're like, "Vanessa, that's so small." Our brain gives 12.5 times more weight to our gestures. So we are looking to gestures to see, are you telling me the truth? Do you have 3 ideas or do you have 3 ideas? We're looking for congruence with gestures. So when you're explaining what you do, who you are, your ideas, can you explain it with a little bit of gesture? Is it a big idea? Is it 3 different things? It makes you look smarter.
