A short transcript excerpt from a YouTube interview where two speakers discuss leaving a stable, high-paying job to start a business. Speaker B explains they never seriously worried about guaranteed income because they believed strongly in their idea, perceived a market gap, and intentionally positioned the new firm as "the best sales recruitment company."
You're essentially trading some guaranteed income or nothing. How do you do that? How did you get over that mental barrier?
I think we never really thought about that. I just knew that we were going to build a great company and that failure wasn't an option and that we saw a gap in the marketplace that we felt better equipped than anybody to fill. And I think we set out with a specific. We did set out to be the best sales recruitment company and actually we came out of the gate calling ourselves the best sales recruitment company because who was going to argue with us?
You're the only one at the time, right?
Exactly. So I remember just calling companies, saying, calling from sales talent agency. We're Canada's best sales recruitment company. And people would just say, great. So I didn't put much thought into, oh, I'm making this much, I better make this much and more. It wasn't that calculated. I just felt that it wasn't a deal that made sense for me. Like, looking down, I'm just starting out fairly early in my career and I'm being asked to work more and get paid less. There wasn't that much thought. I mean, I'd always. We'd always been talking about different business ideas and this one just made sense and we just ran with it.
