How We Think About Money (and some of the Psychology Behind it)

Two people explain how to manage money by treating each deposit as a moment to decide what it's for, then splitting your balance into separate accounts by goal. They also describe three seasons of financial habits: Recovery from debt, Fund for the future, and Balance for using money now while preparing ahead.
How do you balance giving people practical tools while addressing the emotional and psychological side of money management?
Yeah, so the money habit is all around the behavior of how we manage money. Collect, preserve, distribute. The key is we don't need to know the behavioral wiring. You don't need to go into the science of it, it's just in. You and I do talk about it in the book, but you don't really need to know why you do certain things. We just do. So the system is designed around it. The first element is money comes into your bank, the behavioral intercept. Therefore, money must be managed at your bank if that's where you're going. That's the first thing. The second thing is we carve money up into different accounts. We do this so that you have absolute clarity of what money is available for what purpose. But we also do other techniques like removing temptation. There's certain things that's very tempting to just borrow this one time and to break a system. So how do we hide that away and preserve it? There's other things about seasonality. When you start the money habit, some people, many people will likely be in the recovery season, needing to fix challenges of past debt that they've accumulated and so forth. Okay. Other people may be in what I call the fund season, where you're saving for the future with some more intensity. A lot of people I hope will be in the balance stage. Balance is where you're preparing for the future, but you're also activating what money you have available now to live.
Now.
And there's also the activate stage where maybe you're all in on the present and the financial means are in place that that's the appropriate thing to do. And the interesting thing about this seasonality is it's not that you move from one season to the next and to the next to the final. It's not like you go to fourth seasons. We ping pong around, just like in nature. Sometimes fall comes a little bit earlier than expected. This winter that we're going through, it seems like it's around forever. Winter could be the recovery season and spring could be the activate season or whatever, but you'll move through seasons over time.
