Toilet Paper Entrepreneur Intro

Mike Michalowicz built three successful companies without venture funding or an elite degree. He wrote The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur as a practical guide for solo founders who need ingenuity and self-reliance, not connections or capital, to survive the long grind most media ignores.

My name is Mike Michalowicz. I'm the author of the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur. It's a book I wrote back in 2008. Actually, I was very fortunate. I had grown three successful companies. But what I found was I followed a pattern that most entrepreneurs that you read about don't follow. I wasn't an overnight success. I didn't get funding. I didn't drop out of Harvard. I kind of fought through the trenches. I think there is a big myth out there. It's perpetuated through the media. If you go to Entrepreneur magazine or Inc. Magazine or any of the covers of any of these popular magazines, or you look on the news or wherever, you'll see the stories of these super successful entrepreneurs that had made millions, if not billions, overnight. And to me, that started becoming a little disturbing. Not that they were successful. That's fantastic. The thing is, it's not real, meaning it's not the norm. What most entrepreneurs experience is the trenches. It's a fight the whole distance. I gotta admit it. I'm the first to admit it. This book is not for everyone. It's not an academic read. There is no theory in it. It's real, practical advice. But let me put the warning label on it right now. It's raw. It's how I really talk. It's how entrepreneurs really talk. The story of the toilet paper entrepreneur, the common entrepreneur, is that it's ingenuity over funding. It's effort over contacts. We depend upon ourselves. You know that dream team they write about in every business plan, all these people that are going to come together and make this a success. Ultimately, the entrepreneur is the dream team. It's up to them to make it successful. So when I wrote the Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, I wrote about all the strategies, all the tips and tricks, all the ways for a single person, an entrepreneur that's going at it alone, without that backing, to be successful. I totally believe in them. I totally believe they can do it. One guy almost flippantly said to me, so what are you trying to do with this book, Mike? You trying to save the world? And my answer, which has now kind of become a mantra, was this. I said, no, I'm not trying to save the world. Entrepreneurs are the ones who are saving the world. My job is to save entrepreneurs. I really believe.
