How I handled a nasty live comment #substack #shorts

During a live interview with New York Times bestseller Michelle Richman, an anonymous viewer typed "Can you shut up and let her talk?" The host felt small at first, then paused, reframed it, and redirected back to the guest. The lesson: you can't control hostile comments, only how you respond.

Take a break, go outside, pet the dog, do whatever you have to do, but just take a distance so that you're able to look at it from the outside. And then when you come back, you're like, oh my God, I'm not going to let this person bring me down. I had an example, if I may share, that I was actually live and it was so uncomfortable. I interviewed a New York Times bestseller who is a Substack bestseller as well called Michelle Richman. And I was very excited. Uh, she had this amazing book, became a New York Times bestseller. So I invited her to do a live session and I was trying to do my job. I had done my research. So I was asking her a lot of questions. I was giving context. And then in the middle of the conversation, a stranger, someone that I had never seen, I had never seen that name, said, uh, can you shut up and let her talk? Oh, while I was delivering. the live session. And all of a sudden, oh, I swear to you, it's like I can, I can live it now again. I felt so small and I felt that I was doing such a poor job. And this was live. So I didn't have the option of going to the kitchen in the middle of the live, leaving Michelle talking about her New York Times bestseller book and come back. And so it took me a couple of seconds. I think even my body just became really small. Yeah. And at one point I came back and I said, so Michelle, It looks like people really want to hear from you. So my next question is— and instead of being upset and focusing on that negative comment, I was able to kind of turn it around and say, no, I'm not going to let this bring me down. Yeah. I think this example is relevant because it's going to happen, and how we handle that is the only thing that we can control.
