This meditation is designed to take you beyond the normal experience of the five senses. It's designed to allow your consciousness to expand. The tones in the music will really support you to reach new levels of experience. But to get the best from this, you need to set a clear intention. And generally speaking, the kind of intentions that work well for an exercise like this one are either an intention to explore some aspect of yourself or to be open to receive new knowledge from the deepest part of your true nature. So you might simply have the intention of setting a question and asking to be shown something. For example, you might set the intention of show me what I most need to know for my highest good. Or you may wish to cultivate a particular quality so you could have an intention to relax really deeply or to experience deep, calm and vibrant energy. So you might want to take a few moments and pause the exercise now and just write down your intention or say it out loud. So this meditation will help you to go beyond the senses, not by withdrawing from them, but by bringing them alive with the aware sensitivity that is your real intelligence, your real, real nature, allowing that to bring you new information. In order to do that, you have to set aside your ideas of what you already know and be open to receive new information. And this exercise begins with what's called coming to your senses. And we use that to build on our normal range of sensory experience by connecting with a wonderful sense of energy in the body, which is the most vibrant part of our experience. And you can notice this by paying attention to your physical body. Often people think that the physical body has an energy body, but it's actually the other way around. Your being is primarily energy and awareness. And I would recommend that you do this exercise sitting up comfortably. But if you have back trouble or need to lie down, that's fine. But just remember the invitation here is to be awake. This is very much about being receptive and allowing the tones and your intention to guide the unfolding of your experience in the present moment. So now just taking time to get comfortable, to make sure you're not going to be disturbed. So just feel your weight in the chair if you're sitting, if you're lying, just feeling the weight and shape of your body, getting a general sense, relaxed or not, there's no need to try to change anything just yet. Just allowing yourself to be exactly as you are noticing your mood, noticing whether your mind is clear and bright or if it's dull. And it doesn't really matter which of those. It may be just listening really intently, as if you're trying to hear the stars turn in the sky, listening to the tones and the sounds, maybe even hearing sound. Beyond that, it doesn't matter whether you do or you don't intend to listen carefully. And as you do that, noticing again the weight and the shape of your body, the sense of weight, of isness in your body, allowing the weight to go down through your seat, perhaps being aware of where your hands are and how they feel, the warmth or coolness of your limbs, just allowing it to be just as it is. You may notice the breath coming in and going out, not trying to change it, just noticing, however it is allowing things to be as they are, offering no resistance to the experience that you're having. You may be aware of the air and the sense of energy in the room, the temperature of the air as it makes contact with the skin line. So there's the sounds, the feeling of warmth or coolness, the general sense of the weight and shape of that body. Maybe notice which part of you is the most comfortable, which part of your body is the most comfortable and relaxed. One of these points of focus will be the natural center of your experience. Almost as if that is what awareness is interested in. It could be the breath, it could be the sounds in the background.
Or.
It could be the way your hands feel resting in your lap. And it doesn't matter what it is and it may change, and that's fine. If you can't find a natural center, then you can just use the breath or the tones, some central point where you just allow your awareness to rest there. And at this point it may be a good time just to restate your intention. Just to remind yourself if you're developing some other quality, you can just name that now. Or you could just restate your question. For instance, show me what I most need to know for my highest good. Then listening with your body, aware of all the various sensations. And if you need to, you can spend a moment cultivating some relaxation. And you may not need to. It's fine if you do or don't. Maybe just allow any tension to fade away or drain down into the floor. Noticing the most comfortable part of your body and imagining that comfort floating around you like a cloud of light, bringing ease. And I'll be quiet now. Just allow the tones to guide you.
Sam.
