Ask Vishen Episode 5: How To Have Unrelenting Focus

Vishen Lakhiani blocks nearly all his weekly time in a packed Google Calendar, scheduling family, exercise, and meditation alongside work. He dedicates 2.5 hours daily to personal routines and rejects 70-80 hour workweeks as harmful, using Nir Eyal's indistractable concept to protect focus.

So I want to share with you guys a simple idea I use to stay productive. And it's an idea that Nur Eyal, who wrote the book hooked, calls being indistractable. So, first, take a look at my Google calendar. Now, most people who see my Google Calendar, they wonder, what on earth is wrong with this guy? Because I have pretty much everything booked in my Google Calendar. In fact, I deliberately keep maybe only three or four hours a week available for miscellaneous brainstorms or miscellaneous meetings. I even block out time with family. I block out gym time. I block out personal time, which is what I do for meditation. I deliberately keep my week packed. And people look at that and they go, oh, my God, this guy is just obsessive compulsive. Or this guy is just way too busy. But actually, it's the opposite. Nurayal says everyone's calendar should look like that because you should know exactly what you need to focus on on a week basis. Because if you're not, you get distracted by random meetings, by random calls, by people who need you for something that may not be part of that, which you need to do to hit your goal or mission. So I keep my calendar packed to be, in Nurayal's words, in this tractable. Now, there's a beautiful benefit to this. When you know what you're trying to create. When you know your mission, you. You can break it down into your weekly tasks, your weekly habits, and you gotta look holistically. So my calendar doesn't just put down what I need to do for work. It puts down the time I know I need for rest. There's about two and a half hours every day blocked out for family, there is hours every day blocked out for meditation and gym. That is being indestructible. And I'm so serious about my personal growth that even if I have an important phone call from a famous author who needs to speak to me, they have to go to my online calendar and find a slot that might be like, five days away where I'm available. But that's because I've committed to myself that I never let work get in the way of my personal growth. The problem in the world today is this thing I call the hustle myth. It's the idea that you gotta hustle, hustle, hustle, work hard, put in 70, 80 hours to be a successful entrepreneur. It's B.S. it's a broken system. It leads to broken health, broken marriages, bad relationships with your kids, and it doesn't improve your productivity. So you want to make sure that you're indestructible. You've blocked out your work time. But you're also highly structured and disciplined about your rejuvenation time, your rest time, and your time with all the other aspects of life that truly matter. So I hope you got something out of that idea. Remember, your calendar, according to Nur Eyal, should look like this.
