Do Rich People Really Sleep? | Eric Edmeades

Eric Edmeades argues rich people actually do sleep, and plenty of it. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and LeBron James all prioritize seven to nine hours nightly. Chronic sleep deprivation damages cognition, mood, creativity, and immune function, and men who sleep five hours have measurably smaller testes.

Rich people don't sleep eight hours a day. Rich people don't sleep eight hours a day. Over and over again, we hear the message from them. I'm a huge believer in sleep. Shut your engines and discover the power of sleep. Whatever you can do can never ever substitute for sleep. Me, I need eight hours for sleep. I think better I have more energy. The truth is the replenishing sleep that keeps your mind sharp is 8 hours. At least 7 hours of sleep. 7 to 8 hours of sleep is the average ideal. Between 7 and 8 hours of sleep, 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. You gotta have a good night of sleep at least a couple of nights of the week. Then, yeah, you can get by on your five hour nights. But what Steve's doing is he's taking the occasional time when somebody out there, some billionaire says, oh, oh yeah, I slept five hours last night. It was that night. They had a project, they had a rocket they were putting into space. They had an app they were launching. Of course they only got five hours that night. But you know why they had the creativity, you know why they had the energy, you know why they had the power, you know why they had health to do what they were doing? Cause they were getting sleep.
And so David's ready for bed at just about the usual time. Of course he sometimes stays up later, but that doesn't happen often enough to change his going to bed habits.
Bill Gates says he needs to get seven hours of sleep. Jeff Bezos says 8. Jack Ma, LeBron James, the list goes on of very successful people at the pinnacle of their careers telling us that sleep is an important part of their health. If you buy into the Steve Lye, if you buy into this idea that rich people don't sleep, here are the consequences. First of all, not sleeping properly causes weight gain and certainly slows down weight loss. It contributes to fatigue. It causes weird food cravings, it creates mood swings. It makes people have an angry temper more often than they would really like. It can mess with your equilibrium and balance. It can affect your energy in the course of the day. It can diminish your creativity and, and I don't know if this matters to you, but it also reduces your sex drive.
Men who sleep five hours a night have significantly smaller testicles than those who sleep seven hours or more.
Why is this so important? Well, there's all the things I already mentioned, but there's something else you need to know. Sleep is key to immune function. It is absolutely key. If you are not getting Enough sleep, say, because you are looking at a device full of scary news about how terrifying the world is. You're causing all kinds of damage to your immune system. And you want a strong immune system, not just to protect you from viruses and bacteria and that kind of stuff, but your immune system also is responsible for healing your body and dealing with things like injury. So the healthier your immune system is, the faster you heal from injury, the less likely you are to get injured and the the less likely you are to get sick. And if you do, the quicker you're going to heal. You want to make sure you're getting some sleep. In fact, this is one of the things that stimulated me to join forces with Vishen, Lakhiani and Mindvalley to create a powerful masterclass about the immune system. Because this lie rich people don't sleep is only one of many lies that are damaging people's perceptions of health. And I want to help you to fix those things. In this masterclass you're going to learn some very interesting things about the immune system. For example, that you have an innate immune system and you have a learned immune system and that your body has some very specific needs. And when those needs are not getting met, your immunity gets compromised. And so in this masterclass, you're going to learn powerful strategies for building a strong body, a strong immune system effectively for raising your shields, the ultimate self defense. Join me in Vishen for this masterclass and learn how to strengthen your immune system, raise your shields and walk around feeling confident that your body is on your side.
