Why can't you just be tough? What does being tough do for you?
We all know it's counterintuitive to think that, okay, resiliency isn't going to give you that strength. It's going to give you that strength. But we also have to allow ourselves the softness. We have to allow ourselves the compassion, the human compassion to actually feel. When something bad happens, I'm going to shove it under a rug. When something bad happens, I'm going to overwork and I'm going to prove them wrong. And so when we're so tough and we don't stop, then we do have a fall. Maybe the fall looks like a breakup. Maybe the fall looks like a literal fall where it's a medical diagnosis. Maybe the fall looks like a car accident or something that you cannot control. But it happens to wake us up, and that's why we need to have that softness.
