Podcasts might be making you dumber. And there's research behind it

Vishen Lakhiani argues that overconfident podcast guests spread inaccuracy. Philip Tetlock's study of 284 experts found the most confident ones made the worst predictions, while scientists who hedged their claims were more reliable. Check a speaker's credentials and whether they present multiple perspectives instead of certainty.

Podcasts are actually making you dumber. This is a crazy bit of research I found on the accuracy of the guests who are showing up on podcast and the guests who are going viral on social media. And if you are a real scientist or researcher, you're probably gonna like this. So Philip Tetlock, a researcher, studied experts to see how accurate they were in their bold predictions. And he studied 284 experts, 80,000 predictions. He then tracked these experts. Now, these are famous people that you see on podcasts, that you see blowing up on social media, and he tracked them over time. And what he found was this: the ones who were most confident about their predictions were the ones who were most wrong. The ones who were actually less confident and were real scientists— and real scientists don't speak with certainty. They don't say, well, the data shows this, And this is what you gotta do to live longer. They go, well, the data shows this, but there's also this, and there's also this, and we are still researching this. Actual scientists hedge, and this is because they are smart enough to see how much they do not know. Every time you listen to an expert, I want you to pay attention to, do they have real credentials? And are they showing you multiple sides of the picture? Rather than speaking with this BS confidence on one thing. Now, there is a way, if you're an expert, if you're a teacher, that you can do both, that you can actually get good, honest facts out, proper ideas out while still making it viral. It's an art form. It's slightly more difficult, but it serves the world better and it makes you more credible. Mindvalley has published over 100 courses from world-leading experts. I've been in the director's chair, in the curriculum designer chair for 22 years working with these teachers. And there are several things that I noticed about what makes them great teachers. We're gonna share some of the greatest principles we've found in terms of how great teachers, great authorities actually convey ideas truthfully with an impact. And if you wanna learn this, we're putting on a free summit this month. It's called Speaking and Influence Summit. We're gonna share for 12 hours straight. We're gonna bring in some of the best minds on speaking, on confidence, on getting in front of a camera, on conveying ideas, and we're gonna teach you what we learn. Sign up at the link below.
