Rapid Fire with Dr. Shefali

A short Mindvalley 'Rapid Fire' video in which Dr. Shefali introduces her approach to conscious parenting. She emphasizes that parental ego and lack of self-care drive reactive, controlling behavior; recommends meditation/pausing to break reactivity; and discusses transitioning from controlling parents to allies of adult children. She invites viewers to a masterclass for deeper learning.

One of my biggest challenges as a parent, which I believe every parent faces, is the parental ego. Yeah, rapid fire. What did I say? Rapid fire. I know. Hi everyone, this is Dr. Shefali. And this is my rapid fire with Mindvalley. I started teaching parenting really because I was messing up as a parent and I realized I needed to do something differently. And so this is why I came up with conscious parenting. Because the old way I was doing it, the traditional paradigm just wasn't working for me. The one thing that every newbie parent needs to focus on is, is their own self care. This is so pivotal in the early years because we can lose ourselves in exhaustion and trying to do everything perfectly. But when a parent is not taking care of themselves, this is when they are the most reactive. This is when they're yelling and screaming because they've lost their own sense of self. When a parent has connection to their own sense of self, then from that place of connection, they can connect with their children. One of my biggest challenges as a parent, which I believe every parent faces, is the parental ego. You know, when I began to see that my parental ego was leading the way, how things should be my way, how my needs needed to be met, how my vision needed to be fulfilled, my expectation, and I kept hearing my, my, my. I realized that this wasn't about my child, this was about me, but I was unconscious to it. Utilize the technique of meditation and I cover this in my conscious parenting quest. You know, most parents are on this reactivity cycle with their children where they're constantly commanding their children, constantly yelling at their children, constantly getting angry with their children. And the way to get off that conveyor belt of reactivity, that cycle of reactivity, is to learn the power of meditation through activating stillness, through activating the pause. The challenge that parents of adult children have is how to become their allies. No longer being in the control seat, no longer being in the center stage of their children's lives, but enjoying a backstage view of their children's adult selves. And I think parents have a challenge to let go of control. But this is also their greatest gift in raising adult children, that they don't have to control it all. They can become their allies and develop a deep friendship, a deep bond with their grown up children. If you're a parent or are a child of a parent and are looking to raise yourself and your children into the most powerful beings possible, then sign up for my masterclass because you will not only heal your children, you will also heal yourself.
