A short talk (Q&A style) by Vishen Lakhiani arguing that motivation is unnecessary when one is "pulled" by a compelling personal vision. He attributes the idea to Reverend Michael Beckwith and contrasts being pushed (needing motivation) with being pulled by a mission; he also shares his personal journey through careers before finding his vision.

So I got another question from the mindvalley community. The question is, how do you find the motivation to fight procrastination and actually be a machine balancing work, leisure and play? So I want to share with you guys an idea that I got from the brilliant Reverend Michael Beckwith. Right. Michael Beckwith said you don't need motivation. Motivation is rubbish. All of those ideas that you have to go for motivational seminars or listen to a motivational pep talk, it's rubbish. It's because the people who need that are not truly doing a job or doing a role that aligns with their mission. He says you can be pulled by a vision or you can have the need to be pushed. And if you need to be pushed, you're probably not pursuing the right vision. But if your vision pulls you, you don't need to be pushed. You don't need motivation. So I don't need motivation to do what I do because I wake up every day and I'm pulled by a vision. Now, I didn't get there automatically. It took me years to figure out what I was meant to do. I struggled with going from being a computer engineer, being a photographer, being an actor before I figured out what I really was meant to do. And that vision now pulls me. But, you know, when I was a programmer, I needed motivation. So the question is, do you need motivation or do you need to find a vision that pulls you forward? Think on that.
