A short conversation (YouTube) in which Vishen Lakhiani and a speaker discuss what makes networking effective for entrepreneurs. The speaker argues that ‘who you know’ only opens doors; successful networking requires being liked, trusted, and—crucially—respected for your abilities so others will do business with or invest in you. Exchanging contact details without building real relationships is ineffective.
How important are connections and your network? Being an entrepreneur.
Most people believe the success depends on who you know. That is not correct. Who you know simply opens the door for you. Do they like you? Even if they like you, they're not going to do business with you. Do they trust you? Even if they trust you, they still not going to do business with you. Let me give an example. You have a nanny. You obviously know her. You obviously like her. You even trust her with your most important asset in your life, which is your children. But you're not going to invest in her business. The last part, do they respect you? The minute they start respecting you for your business, for your intellect, for something that you want to do now, they're willing to invest in you. They're going to do business with you. When you go to a networking event and you simply exchange the business card or your contact, that is a complete waste of time. You have to build real relationships.
And that real relationship is they have to like you, trust you, respect your abilities. Yes, love that.
