Wanna Transform Your Life? Start With Your Thoughts | Marisa Peer

Marisa Peer argues that changing your beliefs, not effort alone, transforms your life. She claims that working harder doesn't guarantee success, but shifting your thoughts does.

Have you ever tried really hard to pull something off, tried so hard to get something you want and found that the more effort you make, the less of the results you're getting? See, we have this belief, effort equals achievement. It's actually not true. That may be hard to hear. Think about a fly. A fly is trapped against the window and it's hitting the glass and hitting the glass and putting in huge effort to getting out. It's not going to get out because effort doesn't equal achievement. Let me give you an example. Imagine you think, you know, I want a promotion, I want a great job, I want more money. I'm going to put in so much effort, I'm going to go for tons of interviews and apply for everything and tell my boss I want to pay rise. And I'm putting in so much effort and I'm getting rejection after rejection after rejection. Do you know why? Because your beliefs affect your behavior. And if you want something that's really important, the first thing, the most important thing to do is to start changing your beliefs. This is how it works. Imagine you want that job, but you're thinking, well, you know, I don't have a college degree. People in my office are better than me. I get really nervous when I'm the focus of attention. I want this new job, but I'm really worried I might blow it. I might not be good enough. Beliefs will sabotage you. There's a big difference between a fleeting thought and a fixed belief. Fleeting thought is, oh, I'm a little anxious today, a little nervous, that's okay. But a fixed belief is, I'm always nervous. It always goes wrong. I can't do this. I'm not ready. I'm not smart enough, educated enough, experienced enough. When you have a fixed belief, it affects your whole behavior. Here's how it works. Your thoughts dictate your feelings. Your feelings dictate your actions and your behaviors and all thinking, okay, I'm going to change my actions, change my behaviors. But if you understand, it goes back. Thoughts come first, feelings come second. Behaviors and actions come third and fourth. So don't change the third and fourth. Change the first, change the second. You make your beliefs and then your beliefs turn right around and they make you and you have a belief. I'm not good with people. I can't sell. I'm just not good at drawing attention. I don't know how to take my business further. When you have those beliefs, they affect everything and they are the blocking thoughts. Your blocking thoughts are your beliefs. And here's the Great news. Your beliefs are yours to change. When I was at school, I was told, you know, you're not going to get anywhere. My brother was the smart one. He went to private school. I didn't. But I learned later that it was up to me to believe I had something to offer and I could do it all on my own. So look at your beliefs, look at your thoughts, look at your beliefs, look at your feelings which are causing your behaviors and actions. Remember, it's really hard work changing behaviors and actions. You know what's so great? It's really easy to change your thoughts. I can't do it. I can do it. I'm not ready. I'm ready. I'm not experienced enough. I can get experienced experience as I go along. I promise you changing your thoughts is easy. It's also completely free and it is life changing.
