Gelong Thubten (in a talk hosted by Vishen Lakhiani) explains that people commonly mistake happiness for a transient feeling or sensation and pursue instant-gratification experiences to feel better. This pursuit paradoxically increases feelings of depletion and unhappiness: the more we chase fleeting highs to alleviate discomfort, the more we reinforce a sense of lack and become more unhappy.
