Your voice is the bridge between where you are and the impact you’re meant to make

Vishen Lakhiani argues communication skills matter more than technical expertise for career success. Google ranked it above STEM abilities, and he sent his 18-year-old son to study under Eric Edmeades, a top speaking trainer. Mindvalley is hosting a free Speaking and Influence Summit in June with 75,000 attendees expected.

Have you ever watched someone less qualified than you walk into a room you should have owned? And that person takes the stage that should have been yours, gets paid for the work you've done better, longer, and quieter. So here's the reality. It's not that they are smarter. It's not even that they are luckier. It's that they learned communication. Google did a study on its employees, and they wanted to see what were the most important skills that led to the best employeeship. What Google found in that famous study is that communication was more important than STEM skills, science, technology, engineering, math. This is why the person who often gets the promotion isn't the smartest person, but the best communicator. LinkedIn did another study and showed that communication was one of the top 3 most important skills to develop. So communication is how you convey ideas. It's how you present at a meeting. It's how you get on stage. It's how you pitch a new idea, whether it's to your boss or to an investor, most people underestimate it. And this could be costing you a lot of money. Now communication, just like any other skill, it's a science, it's a pattern. There are people who have broken it down and can teach you how to master it. My son's about to go off to university. And a few months ago, I decided to fly him to Florida. I traveled with him. I took a week off work to enroll him in a public speaking class under Eric Edmides. Eric Edmides is the guy who I consider the top public speaking trainer in the world. I took all the time away from work because as a father, I wanted to make sure that my 18-year-old son learned the skill that I consider most vital to his success. Now, as the founder of Mindvalley, where we've published hundreds of programs and teachers in every aspect of personal growth and training and development for founders, we think it would be an amazing idea to live this belief and actually create a free training on communication for you, our audience. And so this June, we're organizing Speaking and Influence Summit, completely free. Last year, 75,000 people attended, and we're bringing in many of the world's greatest teachers in speaking and communication. And of course, the man who trained my son and also had a big impact on my speaking style, Eric Edmeades, he is going to be leading this.
