New musicians waste energy releasing full albums before building an audience. Release singles instead, which give you more chances to hit with listeners. Think of each single as an at-bat, an album as one swing.
when an artist is just starting out, what is the first thing that they should do in terms of marketing and promoting?
There's a couple of key theories or principles. One is I think artists should not be releasing collections until they have momentum.
Agree. It's a singles market.
Right. And it's like, you know, we could say it's a singles market. We could say singles perform better. But I, you know, Even if you don't believe that, you just say singles give you the most at-bats. They give you the most opportunities to hit a home run. An album is one opportunity to hit a home run, and you just wasted all that effort of making the album in one go.
Right.
So since you don't know a whole lot about promoting, let's give you the most exposure to promotional runs we can and just say release a single at a time. At what cadence? Whatever cadence you can maximally devote effort to promoting it.
