Construction isn't behind on digital. It's stuck on the wrong tools.

In this video, William Doyle MRICS argues that while the construction industry has made notable progress in digital adoption, it remains hampered by a reliance on inadequate tools that fail to address the fundamental distinction between structured and unstructured data. He contrasts the simplicity of QSH (Quality, Safety, Health) records—typically unstructured, mutually exclusive, and easily retrieved—with the complexity of commercial record keeping, which integrates Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS), standard methods of measurement, program activities, and cost component schedules. For complex use cases such as compensation assessments, practitioners often need to pull a small fraction (around 8‑9%) from hundreds of records quickly. Doyle contends that current solutions like basic form builders or simple digitization are insufficient; the industry needs more sophisticated data extraction and management tools capable of rapid, selective access across large, structured datasets.
