Why construction still hasn't cracked digital

In this segment of the YouTube talk, William Doyle MRICS reflects on the construction industry's partial digital adoption, emphasizing a critical gap: the handling of structured versus unstructured data. He contrasts the relatively simple, mutually exclusive QSH (quality, safety, health) records—where a file can be retrieved, read in full, and stored again—with the far more complex commercial record‑keeping that integrates Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), Cost Breakdown Structures (CBS), standard methods of measurement, program activities, and cost component schedules. Doyle points out that for use cases such as compensation assessments, practitioners may need to pull a few hundred records but extract only a small fraction (around 8‑9%) of each, and they must do so quickly. This requirement exceeds the capabilities of basic form builders or simple electronic form digitisation, demanding more sophisticated data‑extraction and management solutions.
